I got my lap grinder last week and have ground my through a dozen or so pieces. I have been attaching the stone to an nail with super glue. Super glue works real well gluing my fingers together, but its a whole lot slower gluing rock to metal. Why?? Is there a secret to it. bob

Bob, cyanoacrylate is a polymer whose curing can be accelerated. They sell commercial compounds for that but you can get a somewhat quicker cure with your breath. It doesn't work as quick but it does speed it up. Put you glue on the pieces, put them together and breath on them for about a minute. You can then let go of them. You should still wait about 5 minutes for a full cure.

Use the gel form. Put a good bump on the nail head and set it on the stone. It'll stand on its own pretty quick. Leave it a while. I usually dop up a bunch before I go to sleep and let them sit over night. Tony

I would just go ahead and by a bottle of the spritz type accelearator for super glue. There are a few brands available like NFC Hot accelerator and Zip Kicker. All you have to do is spray one time on the stone you want to attach the nail head to, put some gel type super glue on the nail head, and set it on the stone. It will attach itself in about 10 seconds and will become harder in a few minutes. It is very simple and fast. Do a search under "super glue accelerator" on Google and you can find some easily.

If you grind a flat spot on the nail head before glueing, it will attach better.
You can glue to a nail to give you a handle, keeps your fingernails from getting chewed up. You remove the nail when you are finished, either with cold or heat. I use a torch and heat the nail, not the cab, the cab just falls off.

I let my fingers and nails get chewed up. They heal in about a week.

CUL-Ann- Some of us use a nail instead of a dopping stick when grinding cabochons. After the cab is finished, we simply soak the cab in hot water and pop the nail off. I always polish the glue from the back of the cab afterwards.

Super glue works real well gluing my fingers together, but its a whole lot slower gluing rock to metal. Super glue is NOT MY friend! - I gave up after supergluing my fingers together and getting my young son to help me get to the sink (which was full of dishes at that time of course) I dop or use bandaids on my fingers - the cheap kind works fine - specially since it's always the same fingers that get ground down

I picked up a little bottle of super glue gel at the parts house today. It took less than 5 minutes to get 10 nail rock combos to the point that I could walk away. Thanks everyone.
