I recently bought 800lbs of Petrified, Opalized, and Petrified/opalized wood from virgin valley from a local collector 2 weeks ago. The problem is some of the rough is very crumbly if you cut it too thin 3/8"- 1/2". I have been able to get a few cabs out of it and they are really nice; but I have some pieces of dark brown/black material that is full of fire but it is just to crumbly to cab. I have some opticon on it's way but was hoping for a little guidance. I thought I saw a really good thread on here somewhere on the use of opticon but have worn out the search feature on here looking for it with no luck.
Also if anyone is interested in some of the wood let me know, we can trade. Thank you in advance, Phil

Bobby1 did one with in the last two months, I think, certainly during the summer, and here in cabbing. Just look for his posts Back to 8 or 10 pages. Tony

Desertdweller has a stabilizing process using Waterglass citric acid and maybe something else. you might check with jamie, I got it from her but right at the moment I havn't a clue which file box it's hiding in. The formula was posted over a year ago and finding it in the archives might take a whole bunch of looking !

Thank you for the replies. I tried searching for the post by Bobby1 but could not find anything that pertained to opticon and stabilizing. I think I will try the Sodium Silicate process.
Thanks again for the help.

I spent two hours looking for that. I saw it once but could not find it again. Thank you very much Parfive. I owe you one now.
