For the first time I cut material like this This material was very popular during 19th century. It requires a bit specific cabbing technique. Know what it is?

19th century - is it Jet? I didn't think jet took much of a shine, though.

I also think it's jet Beautiful shine! And what is the special cabbing technique you have to use for this material? Or is it top secret? Adrian

Tweet, it's not jade but I would make the same mistake if I needed to decide according to picture only. It is much lighter than jade. Tony, I didn't have the chance to cut black coral but if it looks like this material I'll put it on my wish list - pretty long list though. ;D Nancy and Adrian, you are right. It is Gagat or Jet. And not just any jet, it is The Whitby Jet - world most famous jet. And I need to thank John (Yorkshire Jack). I asked him if he had some and he kindly sent all of Jet that he had with him. I hope he will be able to find some more. Thanks John. While cutting jet I had fanny feeling that I was going back in history. Maybe it was because of the smell of coal - reminded me on stem engine. I liked it. Almost felt Queen Victoria looking behind my back if I am doing right ;D. Adrian, if I tell top secret I'll have to kill you ;D. John (Yorkshire Jack) whispered me that technique. It is based on the fact that too much speed (like regular cabbing machine) isn't good for jet especially during polishing phase. One way to avoid that problem is manual processing. Oups, now John is going to kill me. ;D Zoran

That is truely beautiful. I learned about the different varieties of coal recently so it is a real treat to see a polished piece of jet.

Zoran, you did an amazing job on that! Solid black cabs are tough...EVERY little mistake shows, if you're not very, very careful. Yours looks perfect!

that is stunning........... the black is so shiny and pretty. I have alot of jet rough that no one seems to buy at the shows. If they saw that cab i would have nothing left. Its amazingly beautiful. What are you going to set it in?
