Brand new member and I want to get my 5yo a vibratory tumbler for Christmas - she is a polished stone, glass, anything shiny - hound.
My husband uses a thumlers for work and I am leaning in that direction.
I saw a G.E.M vibratory tumbler on ebay. Is this a okay item or does anyone have any thoughts on Gemstone Equipment Mfg tumblers?
Thanks, Shannon ;D

THe Thumlers, Lot-O, Vibra/Mini SOcin, and Gy-Roc are best. Raytech is marginal. I would not do the GEM or the CE.

A lot of people swear by the Lot-O. I use a Thumler's UV-18, which I really like. It takes a lot of rock to feed a Thumler's, so you might want to start with something smaller like a Lot-O, Vibra Sonic.
Lucky kid!

Just a quick tip for ebay. I had been looking for a used Lortone or Thumlers for several weeks and most of them were selling at almost new prices. When I searched I would type in "Lortone" or "Thumler" in the search window. One day I decided to see what came up by just searching under "rock tumbler". Now a lot of stuff came up and I had to search thru it, but found several auctions that were for Lortone or Thumler tumblers but was not part of the title and these auctions ended at a much lower price. I ended up getting a used 6 pound and 3 pound Lortone for $51 plus shipping. And typically the 3 pounder by itself would normally go for $50 or more. So search that way, or if you search for a particular brand, click the box that will check the description for the brand name also. Hope that helps.

You already know vibratory tumblers can be very noisy. With respect for the other more experienced respondents, (I am a novice) I am very happy with my Raytech. Since vibratory tumbl;ers need to be fairly full to operate efficiently, you might find some of the machines out there are just too big you will also find they cost significantly more- I bought mine for under $100 on line. I might consider something else for production work, but for your needs the smallest unit available is probably the most suitable. Thumblers smaller machine is a good bet, but It costs a lot more. CHeck out eBay vendors. Stay away from CHicago electric or no-name cheap imports. I have had lots of problems with my CE rotary tumbler. I definitely won't buy from them again. Good luck. Mark H.
