On Saturday we were collecting in an old mining area. There are acres and acres of tailings with lots of drusy and MO lace lying around as well as rocks containing barite, etc. I wanted to get some BIG rocks for the garden. This one was the biggest. It happened to be right at the side of the road so it could be moved directly to the car. Otherwise, it wouldn't have had a new home. The white on the top of the big rock is barite. You can't do anything with it tumbling-wise, but it is very shiny and showy as a yard rock. Here's some others with a little bit of everything. In the last 2 there's one that has barite blades. They look like fins and are partly stained orange. It was a fun day. (Except for the BURRS!)

Great rocks!!!! A couple of the bottom ones look like stuff I found in WY. Pretty cool 'outside' rocks. Don't you think it's kinda funny that we all find rocks outside, that have been outside all their lives, then we 'find' them, and have to have them in the house with us? If you think about it, it really is pretty strange Lord knows my house is filled, and I'll always make room for more!!!!!

Wow, thanks, I was almost embarrassed to post yard rocks. Yeah, Steve, everything is banded and you are right, I wouldn't have called it "tubey" agate but I know exactly what you mean. If it came from Washington County, MO, and it is quartzy, it will be banded with those teeny tiny fortification bands.

Those are really cool! Around here, people just pick big, plain boulders at their local garden supply...
