We will be driving down to San Diego next month, and would like to 'hound Stone Canyon, and collect some material Can someone tell us how to get there, and what regulations/restrictiond there migh be? All I know, is that it is located in, or near Tehachapi, and there is a hiking trail up the canyon. Thank you in advance. Woody

Howdy Woody,
Think you're thinking about Horse Canyon which is located near Tehatchapi. Stone Canyon is far from there. I was on a Calif. Federation trip to Horse Canyon once but I think it's closed now ( though one guy told me it wasn't). When we went it was behind a combination gate and posted fences and we got in only with permission. Stone Canyon is also on private land and was closed last I heard but if you go to Parkfield, CA and contact the Varians, the folks who own the motel and diner ( tiny little town) maybe they can put you in touch with Jack Varian who owns a huge ranch there and lets rockhounds hunt on a fee basis. I've hunted the creek that crosses his land and it's full of good Stone Canyon jasper. I thin the fee when I went last was about $30 per day and he has a nice dry campground right on the creek...Mel

Mel: Thank you! Now, I just have to find Parkfield. That should not be too hard. I when, I searched for Stone Canyon, I came up with a hiking trail near Tehachapi, so assumed that was where the Stone Canyon jasper came from. That assume word gets me all the time. Woody

Woody: Parkfield, which sits right on the San Andreas Fault and is known as the earthquake capitol of Calif, is kind of east of Paso Robles off Hwy 41 I think. Tiny little place but lots of cowboy history. Very very rough country back in the hills there but lots of fine jasper and fossils too. Fall is usually a great time for a hunt there as the creek is very low. Lots of wading in the spring and at many times it's impassible due to the heavy flow....Mel

Mel: I found Parkfield on our map, and see that it pretty close to where we collected some nice material near Colinga two years ago. We will be stopping in Parkfield for sure this trip. Thank you again.
