OK - I'm going to attempt to revive this Field Trip. Banjo, his friend and I have tentatively decided to do this over Labor Day weekend. We have talked about meeting up Friday night, although I'm not sure where. He is currently researching NM sites and he will probably be the one to do the choosing. There are quite a few cool sites along the AZ/NM border, including Round Mountain for fire agate, beautiful Luna agate, Pueblo Park labradorite and bytownite, Mule Creek apache tears and amethyst sceptor crystals, a 3 mile hike in for moonstone at Rabb Park in the Gila. A rugged vehicle may be required...Anyone from this Board who would like to join us is welcome to do so. I think Cuervo expressed interest, as well. COME ON GUYS - let's get some input here. Susan

Well, I'm certainly up for a trip. Not sure about the "rugged vehicle" part, though. I have an SUV, but it's not 4WD, so as long as you don't do anything too crazy, I'll be OK. I think it would be a lot of fun to meet some of the people on this board and do some collecting at a prime site. Hope this works out. Even if the group is a little small, I'd say go for it anyway. I'll block off the time on the calendar--so it doesn't get scheduled for me by certain other members of my household. - Robert

OK, that's 4 people so far - and Pho? How about Nugget, Lotsarock, Flow, Cuervo, c'mon! and Banjo, have you decided where you want to go??? (NM Rockhound - an SUV should be fine, no matter where we go). S

I'm definitely interested, but just no way I can go. Maybe one of these days. Have a great time, and if you find too many treasures and want to sell some, remember me. Trish

We have tentatively decided to head to Luna, NM over Labor Day weekend to collect the elusive Luna agate. I have been out that way a few times, but haven't climbed up to where the agate is located, above road cuts along Highway 180. Digging, rock extraction tools may be required. Highway 180 is easily accesssible by passenger car. Luna is located approximately 6,000 feet above sea level, heavily forested with Ponderosa pine and there are some great places to camp....forest access may dictate the need for a little more "rugged" vehicle - an SUV would be fine, but 4-wheel drive is not necessary. [glow=red,2,300]GOOD CHOICE, BANJO![/glow] I think we'll probably have to hook up early Saturday morning as I'll be working Friday until about 6 pm. Shall we plan on camping overnight? Bring food, water, beer...BRING YOUR HARP! BRING HOBBS! Here are a couple of photos of some crystal covered agate I picked up there as float.

I see Luna County on my map but no town of Luna. Where is it located in relation to Deming?

OK..I found Luna...almost in Arizona and not all that far from my sisters house. She lives between St. Johns and Showlow, in AZ so that would be only about 85 miles.

Sounds good. I was in the area a little to the east of Luna last weekend--Highway 12 near Aragon and Reserve. Beautiful scenery, but I struck out on two of the three sites I visited. Finally got some good agate at Largo Canyon.
Let me know when you have a rendezvous place/time arranged. I may need to make this a long day trip rather than an overnighter since my camping gear is still in storage.

All I need now is to come up with the money for the trip...I have my truck (4x4) a two burner camp stove...light....some cooking gear and some chairs. I also have a tent if we are gonna camp out. I can bring a folding table too if needed. I figure I will need about $350 for the trip all told. Betting the gas prices are going up again.

why is all the good stuff so far away,, all we get to do is look for storm tossed coral agate, and if we are lucky on e of the phosphate pits is open to public before backfill.
i have still never gotten any of the calcite from those excursions. always late or just unlucky
florida mostly sucks for rockhounds

We need to lock down a definite date and place. My wife will need that info so she can ask for some time off.... I assume it is still a go?

OK, Any and Eveybody who's still interested - Pho, Cuervo? Banjo, you too- I have to work Friday, so I'll be leaving for Luna in the wee hours of the morning. I think Banjo and I tentatively decided to meet up in Luna on Sat @ 6 am...same time we met at Burro Creek, eh? (You'll remember there's a 1 hr time difference between Az and NM). That would be Labor Day weekend, Pho - Sat, Sept 3rd, Sun, Sept 4th and Mon, Sept 5th. There's a kind of a "triangle" on the E side of Luna where Hwy 180 and Hwy 19 come together. I think there's a church or something on the NE corner. I'll be in that general area, in a gold Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. (Banjo, I hope you and your rockhounding friend are still coming? Does he/she have a name?) I hope to make it a camping trip...I plan to bring my tent, stove, and some firewood. (I hope Mr Hagstrom brings his harp). SEE YOU ALL THERE! ;D Susan

I'm working on the wife: she may already have a horse club {Back Country Horsemen NM} trip/campout commitment for Labor Day weekend. So, I'm not sure if I will be going with y'all. She plans further ahead than I do so its first dibs for the truck/trailer. Without the truck, I'm out: I won't be taking my Camry there. Have to wait'n'see. ed/cuervo
