Howdy folks, Took a little time away from unpacking to take a little hike out my back gate and up the hill to look for some good knapping flint for a buddy and check out the area where I found the strange coral like stuff. Flint here is a bit more disappointing than further north along the Pedernales or south along the Guadalupe River. Mostly just earthtones and pretty unexciting compared to my old California digs. Very nice weather and fine hiking though. Here are just a few pics of my finds. Thanks for looking.....Mel The view out our back gate to the back of our property. Goes uphill from here and gets rocky but those pics messed up for some reason. I'll take some good ones later: Found the coral??? area with no problem. Here are a couple of examples, Still debating whether it's a coral replacement, some kind of stromatolite or just geometric cracking or something of that sort. If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them: Some nice silicified knapping type flint with swirls and bullseyes. Just old browns though: And finally, lots of brecciated and orbed stuff around. The one with the bullseye is actually quite blue looking and pretty neat:

If I could go rockhounding out my back gate, that's where I'd be, like 8-10 hours a day! ;D Cool stuff, go find more stuff to take pics of.

No doubt Randy! I'd be for wandering until I got lost anyways. Nice stuff for backyard material...and just think of the gas your saving Mel. Steve

Neat finds from your new digs Mel! My guess is it's just a matter of time before you dig up some new killer never-before-seen material out there

That stuff certainly looks like coral but if you don't know what it is who will? I'll trade you my backyard material for yours. Not sure if you really want any red shale though. lol

Geez Mel, that's cool stuff! Whereabouts are you? And I'm in CA, and you said this is nothing compared to your 'old digs in California' That's what I get for living in the Central Valley. N O T H I N G - just walnut orchards, tomatoes and sunflowers!

Mel, you sure did pick a pretty spot to settle in with some obvious treasure to be found.

Dee: I'm in Kerrville, Texas now but for 17 years I owned a ranch right in the middle if the Sierra Nevada poppy jasper zone in the vicinity of Hornitos, CA. Had poppy jasper right in my fields and on lots of neighboring properties to which I had access, so I was kinda spoiled. Also had a home in S. California from which it was a fairly easy drive out to the Mojave Desert which, as you know, is still chock full of good agate, palm, and jasper locations. Central Texas is just mainly flint and fossils but is sure pretty and quiet compared to California.....Mel

That explains it! Hornitos jasper is gorgeous stuff, I do love those poppy jaspers! I'm up near Sac, so I haven't yet gone rockhounding here... I can't wait to see what you do with that 'coral' and the brecciated too - I'm very curious how it'll polish up!
Rockhounding around the US is one of my retirement dreams, for sure! Only 13 years to go...lol.
