Howdy folks, One of our board members, Harley, has been wanting some Texas flint for knapping some of his fine looking points so I finally made the time to go out and collect some of a size I think he can use. The most difficult task was finding small enough nodules. Really strange and odd looking nodules but fun to hunt, kinda like digging giant dog bones. Anyway, here's just a pic to show ya what the stuff looks like with only a chip or two taken out for testing. The square is a six inch .....Mel

Tony: Yep, gonna have to very creative to get much in a flat rate box. Not very colorful around our place but very fossilferous inside. Mostly grays and browns, some blues, oranges, yellows and translucent rootbeer, black etc. I have some in the coarse grind for the kiddies right now and it actually is looking pretty nice. Think it will at least, shine up pretty well and properly oriented, I think some will actually have a willow creek or Bruneau sort of eggy orby look...Mel

TUMBLING!!! ARGghh what a waste of good knapping rock! Mel, you knap the points and tumble the waste flakes. I get $5 an inch for my better points and don't sell any for less than $5 even my 1/4" points. On the less serious side if the rock looks sort of waxy/smooth it's probably good for knapping. If it's sort of matte looking but not concrete looking, that Texas stuff may knap better if it were heat treated...and will probably get that waxy look and the color may get better. I've had all kinds..just wish I had a rock kiln. The good tabs can bring you $2 a lb or so for the gray and tan colored to $4 or so for the highly colored stuff. (but maybe not in Texas) Lee
