One of my other hobbies is metal detecting, and I bought my Lot-O tumbler partly because I wanted a quicker method of cleaning up grubby looking clad coins and pennies than my old rotary tumblers provide. (Any potentially valuable coins I find are not cleaned in a tumbler -- if at all.) The Lot-O works great for both initial wet cleaning with ceramic pellets and dry polishing with corn cob or walnut shell, however...
When dry polishing in the Lot-O the media becomes loaded with fine rubber grit that's been eroded from the hopper. (Or so it appears. I get the same thing in a rubber rotary drum -- it just takes longer.) After about 3 loads the media needs to be discarded. Do vibes with plastic or poly-vinyl hoppers turn the media black also? If so, is it really material eroded from the hopper, or is it just stuff that's scoured off of the coins? Even without any rubber coming off of the hopper I'd expect the media to eventually blacken -- especially corn cob treated with polish and carnauba wax.
When I say that the media needs to be pitched after 3 loads it's because it starts leaving gooey little black smears on the coins.
So... do the vibes with hard plastic hoppers work better for this?
Thanks, Mark

Interesting!!
I don't know a thing about plastic hoppers but I suspect the black residue is from the media and or polish.
If you polish brass/copper/silver,etc by hand the rag always turns black after a bit of rubbing.Multiply this action by a gazillion and that's what you have in the vibe and or rotary???
Just a guess!

That's why I'm wondering how much of an issue the rubber might be, but I'll not be running out to buy a different vibe unit just to find out. I might like to eventually buy a Mini-Sonic to work with, but first I need to fully learn the vibe that I have. Thanks for the input, Mark

Mark, Being that you are tumbling dry water leakage isn't an issue so maybe you can "squish" a 1 gallon plastic jug into the liner just to see if the rubber is an issue? Wrap it in Saran Wrap so the material can't leak between the jug and rubber liner??
Just a thought.

Might be worth a try. I've got a load of rocks that went in yesterday, so it'll be a while before I can play with it. I buy orange juice in clear plastic jugs made of sterner stuff than milk jugs. Maybe I'll try making one of those fit right into the Lot-O's frame instead of using the rubber hopper...
Thanks for the idea.
