Well I've decided to do a craft show so I've been spending all my free time cabbing my brains out. Here is what I managed to do this past weekend.
Zebra stone. I did this one for Bejewelme. She likes big cabs and this one is a honker measuring about 2" wide and 2 1/2" tall. I'm not sure what the two materials are in this stone but the white is softer than the black. It didn't shine up too well either which leads me to believe the white is quartz, my old nemesis.
Its little brother (or sister).
Ruby. When I first got into tumbling I bought so mine run ruby. I never finished tumbling it but wanted to cabbing one piece. I won't do it again. This has absolutely zero shine. Its destined to be a refrigerator magnet.
Flourite on matrix. I tend to play around sometimes just to see what will happen. This was one of those experiments. Its a thin layer of flourite over its white matrix. Nothing to write home about.
Exotica jasper. Finally a worthy cab. I love this stuff, it shines up so well and has pretty colors and patterns.
Boulder opal. I bought some rough from one of the members here. This one has a bit of fire.
Boulder opal. I bought some BO rough off of ebay for about $60 a pound, which I thought was expensive. Turns out that beginner stuff is higher priced than that. Here is my first cab from that material. The light tan is very very very soft matrix, its crumbly too. I guess at that cheap price I shouldn't expect any fire or color. At least it has some pattern too it. This one is destined for the junk cab pile.
Back side, even less impressive. I need to sell my car to get a few ounces of the good stuff or just give up on BO. ;D
Two Emeralds, kunzite and Australian opal. The emerald was mine run stuff I got to tumble but I'm having fun making little cabs out of it. The kunzite was stolen from Bejewelme's pile. The Australian opal was some beginner stuff I bought from Kingsly North when I first started cabbing. No color in this piece. Someday I want to learn to silversmith and this will come in handy as accent stones.
