Well, tried to photograph my cycad rough and it was just too "rough" to show a good pattern so here are a couple of pics from Frank J. Daniels' book "Petrified Wood, The world of fossilized wood, cones, ferns and cycads". This is by the way one of the most beautifully photographed books on wood and such I've ever seen and I recommend it highly for the wood fancier. As you can see, the cycad can be identified by the diamond shaped leaf scars toward the exterior of the specimens. Rough outer layer: Cut section: Here's a cut example from my collection, of the stromatolite or stony algae growth around a limb that was in the water of a shallow somewhat brackish sea that used to be in Wyoming. If you look close at the little volcano -looking cross sections along the edge of the twigs, you can see the growth layers of the stromatolites. Steve, before it was cut, this was the same kind of lumpy mass as what you have pictured...Mel

Thanks Mel! That is just too cool. I need to get some of both of those for my collection. (Reminder, add to a looooooooong wish list)
That cycad is beautiful inside and out!

Thank you for posting these pics Mel! Astonishing patterns in that cycade. And your stromatolite is extraordinary!

Cool stuff Mel. You were right on with the Stromatolite ID. I cut one tonight and it's exactly what yours looks like. I have both of Frank Daniels books, and they are really amazing! I find myself drooling all over the pages. Some extraordinary pics in those two books. Steve
