LOL, Nancy............who cares what you're on as long as it has 2 wheels. You could make it a little more cool by adding a decal that says "my other bike is a Harley". Shannon

Shannon Hey Shannon, I hadn't thought of that one. Gotta get one Actually I am surprised at all the "real" bikers who wave. I have a funny (but maybe you had to be there) story about attempting , haha, to look cool in front of a couple of old harley guys. Maybe later tho, need to get dinner. Or is that a cop out?

:serious: I ain't gonna laugh .. I promise.. cuz that is one of the coolest bikes i've ever seen this side of the moon.. You go girl.. make it Grumble.. make it squeal.. Take over the Roads.. show them who's boss! and put a sticker on it that says..
" I eat Harley's for Breakfast" Or " I go from zero to 20 in 60 seconds"
Or " watch out.. my kid owns a Huffy" .. but my favorite..
" Bikers code of ethics.. Live to ride.. or die walking"
something like that. ;D

;D ;D too funny Roxy! I love the Huffy one, lol.
The story, okay . . . but remember I said that maybe you had to be there.
When I was just trying to learn how to ride it: One day I managed to go several blocks without killing myself and was feeling pretty confident but shaking too, so I decided I could ride it to the store and get a pack of cigs. As I was about to pull in to the parking lot I saw two old biker guys standing by their big mean looking Harley's and thought I'd better at least look like I thought I was cool and knew what I was doing. So I start to pull into a space, forward, then thought, I think backing in is cool. I'm still pretty nervous over the fact that I actually lived going around the block and my brain is going everywhere. Anyway, as I pull into the space, which has those concrete blocks to keep cars from hitting the fence . . . I turn the throttle instead of squeezing the brakes, go over the concrete block and hit the fence! I calmly shut it off, step off, jerk it over the block. Turn around and say, "Hey guys, nice day for a ride." I go in the store and hope they are gone, but noooo. So I have no choice but to leave. As I start past them, one says, "Sounds good, what kind of mileage do you get?" He was being so cool, making like what I did was nothing ;D It all made me laugh for days. Yup, had to be there.

nancy, I believe the proper response in that situation is supposed to be "I meant to do that" (and been there done that, or at least something close enough to be the same, more than once!).

No road bike now, but I was nearly thirty when I got a licence to drive a car. Now the funny story. I ran a side car for years on a 500 single AJS. I was given an 1920's era sidecar (left side) that totally I restored. When it I had it finished, off came the regular chair, on goes the '20's chair. On the way home from work the first day, I forgot the chair was on the OTHER side. Damned near ran over a guy standing on a corner! I put the chairs wheel over the curb. I still laugh about that one. Well Ihave some crappy news. I have been collecting a few parts over the winter to get my bike back together. Now that the weather hasn't been below zero I've had time to get out in the garage and work on it. I put new seals in the forks I got, and when I went to mount the forks in the tripple trees, I found out they also are bent. I have decided I'm not going to rebuild the bike now. I figure if I hit hard enough to tweak the trees, the rest is probably whacked too.

Nate, with the style of frame on the Virago I'd imagine you should be able to visually see any tweaks in it. Triple clamps are not that difficult to have bent in a crash (well, harder than the forks themselves, or the wheel but easier than the frame) so it is possible the frame is ok. It is also extremely possible that they are just tweaked out of position and not bent - quite common. Did you loosen the steering stem nuts before trying to install the forks?

I've ridden for 45+ years, Brits, Harleys, and Japanese. My current ride is a '97 Valkyrie, plus the BSA on my profile. The best day is riding to the collecting area!! I'm trying to post pic's of my treasures, and I'm sure I will get the job done soon. Later Nick

Nick1970, that was my plan for this summer too- ride to collect. That's gotta be a blast!
Dean, no I didn't loosen the stem up, but I know either the stem or trees are bent because just from looking at the trees, it's not just out of adjustment. I thought the frame looked ok, but I don't want to take that chance. Everyone I've talked to about rebuilding my bike (family, friends, riding buddies, EVERYBODY) has expressed their disbelief that I was rebuilding. The work has fought me every step of the way and as I rebuilt I wondered if it was a sign, someone trying to tell me something. Well, with this discovery I have decided to pay closer attention to all the signs laid out in front of me and scrap it. I've listed it's parts for sale, and am at the point of no return with what's sold so far. I'm not hanging up my helmet, just closing the chapter with this bike and gonna pick something else up eventually. Thanks for the positive thoughts though.

Here's what's been taking up a lot of my time. My new-old bike. I loved my last virago, so I bought another one. This one's an '83 with about 14,000 miles on it - barely broke in! It needed some work, but the price was right. Have since added a windshield and new tires, along with a lot of neglected maintenance and a little elbow grease. It's nice to be in the wind again! Nate
