new to tumbling. anyone know of any good collecting sites, say in a 20 mile radius from fenton, missouri? the meremac river in valley park is where i've collected, thus far, for tumbling material. plenty of agate and assorted rocks.
is there any mozarkite to be found around here? i did find, what i hope turns out to be, some pretty red material from the river.

Hi! and Welcome! You should consider coming to the St. Louis Mineral and Gem Society meeting. First Friday of the month at 7:30 PM in the Geology Building at Wash U. December meeting will be the annual party which includes a silent auction. The club show will be next weekend Friday 11/21 through Sunday. We will be working the admission desk on Saturday from 4 until close, so stop and say hi if you can. It's at the Viking this year, at Watson and Lindbergh. Moved from the Stratford House, close to you, where it has been held every year. I know lots of collecting sites in the area. I've gotten a bit bored with the Meramec in Valley Park etc. The Chain of Rocks gravel bar is good but a bit further than 20 miles probably. Actually, just go more like 50 miles to the Washington State Park area and theres LOTS. Mozarkite shows up here and there as float, and from people I've met, now and then significant sized boulders.. I've seen a map someplace in one of the online sites that indicates a small deposit in Jeffco. That's probably what puts Rock Creek on the list of collecting areas. I've picked up a couple pieces (good sized) out of Rock Creek but I'd say they are low grade relative to what you can get in Lincoln. Their show is earlier in the fall and worth the trip out there -- they take you on a dig if you want to go. Welcome to the board! My tumbled Missouri Lace collection is sort of locally famous, at least at the club.

We've only been members for 2 years and still have a lot of trouble with the names. Show hours are as I recall 5-9 on Friday, 10-7 on Saturday, and 9-5 on sunday, but look them up as I'm not 100% on it. What's the eskomo club?

i'm fairly certain i found some mozarkite today!!!! it was in jefferson county, under the bridge of highway 30, over the saline creek. i was getting an oil change and went for a walk, which led me there. instantly, i found a much better quality flint/chert than i've ever seen before. most were blueish green, and some red. many bands. then, i flipped over this 3" rock and on the underside was purple, red, grey, clear and white. i dipped it in the creek. it had a glassy feel to it and looked very much like petrified wood, but it was in chert/flint. also, when held to the sun, you can see thru the edges. thoughts? is this mozarkite? if so, it's like 2 miles from my house and i'll be spending tons of time there. actually, i will anyway, since there were lots of colorful chert/flint with potential for good polishing. there were some good cronoid fossils there too, including one that was about 6 inches long and 1.5 wide.
so, is this mozarkite?
and btw, i'm computer illeterate. i have no ideas how to put photos into this computer. i got it from my sister in law. when she comes home for christmas, i'll have her show me.

Could you bring it along to the Rock Show Saturday? I'd love to see it. There will be a lot of people there that could give an opinion. What's the nearest cross street close to Saline Creek?

Another thing worth looking for is Union Road Agates. A guy at the club has a site in South County where he finds them. He won't give up the location, though. He says you have to cut a lot of balls (so to speak) to have any chance to find one!

i work all day friday saturday and sunday, so i know i won't be able to get to the show. besides, i may have it tumbling by then. i have a coarse grind ending tomorrow. depending on how much is ready for the next stage, i'll either start that stage or pull out the ready ones for the time being and begin a new coarse grind.
saline creek is about 3 miles southwest of 141 on 30. you'll see a bunch of businesses on the right and there will be a light right after the bridge. the midas, right there, is where i parked. saline creek also crosses 141, about 3 miles se of 30. haven't been there.

my guess on where the union road agates come from......
there is a creek that runs by the grant's trail, the gravois creek, by the union road overpass. i'd park maybe at the mcdonnald's on bayless, and go down to the creek and poke around in the rocks. i lived there for 10 years, but never looked for agates there. i used to fish there and throw 'em back, but never hunt rocks. i know there is no new construction there. it HAS to be in that creek.
do you know how late the show is on friday? it's the only chance i have. is it 9, like you thought?

Don't think so. He's digging them someplace out in the woods in South County. Sorry, I didn't get this in time to answer about yesterday's show hours.

Have seen some really nice Union Road agates in the past. A lot were collected during the construction of I-270 - probably from the roadcuts. Here's a link to a guy who has quite a collection if you don't already know about it. www.thies-times.com/billsrockhill/homepage.htmlSteve
