Just found this today, in the pictures I took the either showed the shine or detail not both so just pretend that the flat surfaces reflect. Its really fairly shiny. Any guesses what it is to help me narrow it down???

Kind of looks like Fuschite but that is the only stone I can think of that is green with a shimmer other than Seraphinte (which comes from Russia).
What ever it is, it's pretty.

Does this material have layers that look like they can be flaked off? I have some schist material that looks very similar that is made up of layers almost like mica but harder to flake apart.

no layers its pretty solid, each of the little bumps appear to be little banged up crystals. It was probably a lot nicer before getting ran over by a glacier.

I don't know, but it looks like if it holds together during cutting and polishing, it would make a darn nice cab.

Could be a type of metamorphic schist.

The massive green zoisite is sounding possible, wikipedia tells me its a type of epodite and there is lots of that here. I'll do some streak/hardness/sg tests in the morning and let everyone know the results.

I'd also guess epidote but without clear crystal faces, it's strictly a wild guess because there's more than a few dark green minerals....Mel

Wow, what a cool rock! Whatever it is, it's 'florentine' with carrots. Spinach with carats?

I'm curious to know if you'll ever cut into that? here's why I ask.. I got this piece the outside looks similar to that.. we thought it was Garnet because it turned red after cabbing.. the slab however looked Goldish.. But the outside.. was green with little flashes but also had some little reds peeking through(that's why we thought garnet ) (i think).. lol.. anyways.. come to find out they say it wasn't garnet at all.. so that's why I'm asking if you've thought about taking a slice off the bottom or something.. if it's hard enough which it looks like it is.. It might be worth it.. or easier to figure out what it is..
Just a thought..

Ok Its about a 6 for hardness, the streak is a bit wierd it leaves white then it will show a little dark green then white again (I think thats because there is more than one mineral in it), and it looks like this when you polish a side. All kinds of stuff going on in there but too many little fractures to cab, but thats ok I like it as is. I think the epidote/zoisite guesses have nailed it. Or at least thats what I'm calling it unless someone figures its something else now. Thanks for the help.
