today, i completed the first rough grind i've done in many years. maybe 1/3 of the rocks are perfect for the next stage, which i figured all along. 1/3 were ugly and will just be grind filler. the rest need to go again.
i've heard of people using ceramic beads as filler, to help the slurry get into tough spots, but i have a thought and am wondering if it is a good one?
at the end of a grind is all the little nublets that broke off, were rounded and won't be good for anything. wouldn't it make sense to just throw them back in as a tiny sized filler, like the ceramic beads would be? i'd think you could just use them over and over until they are gone. also, what about the shards you get when you break rocks down to size with a sledge hammer. there are lots of small bits that wouldn't be good for anything. couldn't these also be used as tiny sized filler?
am i onto something, or did i just drop too much acid during the 1980's following the grateful dead around?

I use the pebbles until they're gone. I don't break rocks for tumbling, but the shards should work, too.
I also use ceramics in my vibe. I don't bother separating out the pebbles from the ceramics.
So, either we both dropped too much acid or we're on to something. Personally these days I'd rather be onto something than on something.

I've looked at ceramic fillers, too- they're expensive though, and I wonder how long they will last. I sometimes find myself without enough little stuff to use as filler/gruiit carrier and if the ceramics are long wearing they might be a good investment. Mark H.

The 80's? yes, the 80's. graduated highschool in 85. by that time, i had already seen them 20 times +/-. i then became a tour rat for several years. stopped in '89, due to boredom and burnout. not to mention i needed to get sober!!!!
