Hi, everyone! Today I had a few hours and headed to the nearest river where I can rockhound. That's probably my last rockhounding this year, as the weather forecasts say it's gonna snow soon . I searched and I searched and found really nothing for two hours. And just when I was heading to the car, I found this: I understand you folks could find it not spectacular, I know now how a pretty palm wood looks like, but this is the first palm wood I find on this river and the second palm wood I ever found, so please understand my happiness And what's even more amazing is that it looks almost like a perfect slab! Thank you for looking, Adrian

Adrian: Spectacular is in the eyes of the beholder, and we can see your hand beholden this piece of pet palm. We also know that we will be seeing a truely spectacular cab or two from this material. Glad to see you finding it before the snow, it is not so much fun rock hounding in the snow even if it is not too deep. Woody

Maybe you will get luck, and be able to get out again before the snow, and find more where this one came from. Woody

Thank you Woody for your comments. But I'm afraid I would dissapoint you both concerning the cabs and the hope of finding similar material: - this slab is going to stay in one piece, I'll only polish it on one side and maybe on some edges: as you probably noticed, the channels are completely hollow and I don't think they will make a nice cab. Beside, I find this natural slab has its own personality and I'd hate to cut it. - as for finding other pieces from the same material, the chances are extremely thin, as I found it in the river-bed of a plain river, with rounder, rolled pebbles which I don't know where do they come from. But anyway, you can be sure I'll try again! Adrian

Great find Adrian! I'm with you, I'd just face polish it and leave it as a specimen. Neater that way than chopped up for cabbing....Mel

Great find, Adrian! I agree that it does have it's own great character, whether suitable for cabbing or not. I think it would look great polished up.

I think it would look much better with your polished face treatment than as cabs. Nice find.

Thank you everyone! I polished it the very next day I picked it: As you see the channels are hollow almost on the whole surface but the material was good to polish. Thanks again for looking, Adrian

That's a great find. Some things need to stay as they are but just cleaned up a little. Your find is one in that catagory. You did a beautiful job on it.

Great find Adrian! How about polishing the sides a little? The fibers look like they have an interesting pattern.

Hey There Adrian..
Being I have no idea about pet woods.. only that I'm excited if you're excited, and happy that you found a palm wood! ... Plus, after seeing your polished piece. I gotta say.. You really do have an eye for true beauty.. I probably would of walked right over that rock not even knowing what it was.... and what a gorgeous shine you got on that! .... Well from now I think I pay more attention to all the rocks.. you just proved that there's always more to a rock than what meets the eye...
