I'm going to progress this hobby now and i'm going to have a go at cutting and shaping some of the rocks. I have a tile saw, which I guess is OK for cutting the rocks, but, and this is the clincher question, is a general purpose bench grinder with course and medium discs suitable? Such as this one here img.en.china.cn/0/0,0,59,16480,370,370,0d5bc00b.jpg

These metal grinders are usually set up to run at 3450 rpm, which is about twice as fast as they should spin. Most of the lapidary wheels are designed to run at 1725 rpm. Bob

If you can find a bench grinder that runs around 1750 rpms, you can. (I have one). You'll need a silicon carbide wheel that's made specifically for lapidary use, they can be purchased for around $25 online.
