Hey Sands, that is a great looking truck and you will love it. I have a V10 250 superduty and it pulls my 36' 5th wheel like a dream. The 250's are real work hogs. I even get pretty good gas mileage when not pulling - 16 or MPG and about 10 when hauling the RV.
The 5th wheels are really nice - offer a bit more room than a pull trailer and are much more stable on the road and easier to back believe it or not. Heck, my 36' 5th wheel is easier to pull and back than the horse trailer I use to have. Don't skimp on a hitch either. If you get a pull behind, you really need to buy stablizers for your hitch. If you decide on a 5th wheel and and if your truck is a shortbed, like mine, you have to spend a few extra bucks for a "slider" hitch that prevents the 5th wheel from slamming into the back of the cab when turning corners. If you have a short bed and go for a 5th wheel DO NOT let anyone talk you out of buying a "slider" They are more expensive, but not near as expensive as fixing the truck after you turn that first corner and the 5th wheel slams into the cab.
And, DON'T YOU DARE go to Florida without coming through Texas and seeing me and BE. Hell, who knows, I might hitch up the 5th wheel and go with ya'!
As far as that goes, you could pack up that new truck and head down here and buy a trailer. You could probably save a bit buying one down here because everything here is less expensive than in the northeast. AND you would save a bunch of gas by not pulling a RV across the country. And, with the cost of gas these days, every little bit helps. I filled up yesterday - cost me $51.35 and I wasn't even completely empty!!
Well, gotta go get to work on the fllight cage I am building for my two new babies - Izzy and Gizmo, the cockatiels.

Sands Llana is right about the 5th wheel- but you lose the ability to put a cap on the truck when hauling! We have friends who had a shortbed 250 and the were talked out of the slider hitch- guess what? Yup almost $4000 in damage (they said screw it and bought a 350 dually longbed!) If you get a pull behind get the Reese Cam action weight distribution hitch with the Cam Action sway bars! mine was almost $600 installed but I can pull that trailer at 65 MPH and have a semi pass me and it don't move an inch- They tried to sell me a friction sway contol but I talked to some who had em and they said they really are touchy and don't work as well- You may not need the weight dist- but they do save wear and tear on the truck drivetrain and shocks (course those Frod Super Duties are brutes when it come to hauling!)

Hey Cookie, I'm doin' fine. Just have more projects goin' than time and energy to do them.
Stefan, the first time I turned a corner and saw that big honker 5th wheel getting closer and closer to the cab, I nearly stoked out. Even though I knew the hitch would slide back to make room it was still scary as hell.
Longbed pickups are pretty hard to come by these days around here - unless you are at the dealership when they roll them off the delivery trucks. The farmers and ranchers snap them right up.
I have a PullRite SuperGlide - they are way superior to any other glider. Mine will pull 20,000 lbs. and new costs $2800.00 new three years ago. I got lucky and found a used one for $1200 - with shipping and installation it ended up costing about $1800. Still way more expensive than other gliders, but well worth it. Don't have to constantly get out and set the glider to slide as with the other gliders. Also the way the hitch is built makes it impossible for the 5th wheel to drop down off the hitch slam through the pickup bed. You set the jacks at the right level, then back onto the ball, and the closing mechanism locks around the ball, then you pull the RV legs up. Know lots of folks that torn up the bed of the pickup raising the jacks, only to have the RV slide off the hitch. Impossible with the PullRite. Now, backing on to the ball just right to lock the mechanism is a whole 'nother story!

Hey John, Llana right about the PullRite. I've had RVs of some sort all my life. Used to belong to NCHA and then FCRV also. I think that the PullRite hitch is the best ever made. Even if you go with a conventional trailer, PullRite makes a hitch that is far superior to anything else out there. Of course you have to pay for it! They are expensive, but it won't take you long to realize that they were worth every penny.

Does Pull Rite make a weight distributing anti sway hitch? I've seen there 5th wheels hitches but never anything else- Course with the price of gas and all I think next year I'll be parking the 36 ft trailer in one site for the whole year- that 1 ton chevy I have (454 4 barrel with 4/10 gears) just ain't easy on gas! (8 MPG towing)

Looks sweet to me- Not sure If you can get a cheaper price (not around here- maybe down South? Onlt thing is the fabric and decor is very light in color- and will show any dirt very quickly! You want to check the couch out carefully- Often times the are built into the the trailer structure (they will have storage underneath) and can be a real pain to move out- It actually might be easier to build the work station where the dinnette is!

Sands, is your truck a V8 or a V10? The V10 will haul 16,000 lbs. If I remember correctly from when I was RV lookin', a V8 will haul about 13,000lbs. Of course, that is total weight. The weight of the trailer and it's contents AND the weight of the truck and it's contents. I am WAY overweight, but since I can't afford the gas to haul this big honker anywhere, it's not a problem.
I am thinking there will be a lot of good deals on RV's in the next couple of months because of the gas prices and the economy across the board. With 95% of the Gulf refining capability destroyed or seriously damaged, and the loss of anywhere from 400 to 600 drilling platforms in the Gulf, gas is going to go sky high. Katrina destroyed more than houses along the Gulf Coast and it's going to seriously effect the economy everywhere.
If I were you, I would decide where I want to go and settle for a while and start checking into RV prices there. Hauling one across country getting 8 to 10 MPG is gonna cost a small fortune.

MY friends just traded in there 350 diesel for another 350 deisel- He told me that freaking thing (a 2006) can haul 35,000 LBS!!!! I guess Ford up the engine output on all there superduties- What year was your truck? Yea Gas is no longer the take fro granted item anymore- We are going to look at a permenate site this weekend- and if all works out I will probably end up selling the truck- I talked to my local RV guy- and he pointed out that the price of everything is going up and that RVing is still gonna be the cheaper way to go! But He also said that used RV prices are gonna fall thru the basement so Sands- if you can wait a couple weeks and see what happens!

Keep us posted! I checked on my permnanat site this weekend- They are opening up a few more sites so I got a good chance! man the trailer for sale here was un believable- Guess they have a dozen people upgrading to larger trailers- course when a trailer sits on a seasonal site for a few years- they tend to develop a lot of leaks when you start to haul em!
