Howdy folks, Not been doing much rock stuff except for having the tumblers going but while working on a stacked stone wall for the new butterfly gardens I was moving another pile of limestone and found this interesting slab with fossils. The first shot is a small coral head on top of a flint nodule. Hand held so I didn't have to set up the tripod but you can see it's like a little cauliflower on the upper right of the flint. Thanks for looking....Mel Then, in the same slab there is the most complete silicified turritella type snail I've found yet, about 1 1/2 inches long :

Howdy Roxy: Yep, since the new house is in a major migratory path for butterflies and I finally got me a new gate installed to keep the deer out of the yard, I'm putting in a garden that will be composed of food plants for caterpillars ( ie: passionflower) and flower filled food plants for adult butterflies and moths like lantana, mist flower etc. Recently toured a garden over at Fredericksburg and it was really neat so I thought I'd set one up too. We have butterflies here by the thousands in season so it should be pretty cool....Mel

Hey Mel.. I think that idea rocks.. I've never seen or heard of a butterfly garden.. and never knew they came in hundreds like that.. I've only seen a butterfly here and there.. never a bunch together.. that might look freaky.. so don't forget to take pics.. !! I'd love to see a swarm of those! *smiles* Ps.. the more I look at that last pic.. reminds me of a unicorn horn.. better not let it get squished K ! Just in case!

Roxy: Yeah, where we moved from, butterflies were actually pretty scarce. Of course, that country was heavily agricultural so too many pesticides were in play. Here in the hill country, it's mostly range country so not many properties get sprayed and the other factor in play is the area is famous for myriad plant species that bloom most the year round. So, lots of bugs, butterflies, birds etc. My wife is a turtle freak and there are so many turtles in the streams here we see them every day which is very cool! This area is probably not everyones cup of tea but if you're into wildlife, it's paradise....Mel

I'm glad Roxy asked what a butterfly garden was because I though you were creating a rock garden full of Butterfly Jasper. Honest, I'm not kidding.
That garden is going to be so beautiful. About an hour where I live there is an indoor Butterfly garden open to the public. It is so beautiful. There is one rule though, if the butterflies land on you, you can not touch them. Oh the temptation is great!
Are you going to dig out that snail?

That is a beautiful fossil. It always amazes me that there are so many things to find when you look. I noticed in TX. at my house there, we had a lot of sage bushes. One year, I saw a lot of caterpillars all over it and I was having a fit because I just knew they would kill that bush. I told a neighbor and they said that the monarch love the sage bushes and just wait and see. I was afraid I would be buying another bush but I waited. The bush thrived and the Monarchs were beautiful when they hatched out. Happens every year, especially on that one bush. I never thought to take pictures so I hope to see lots from you when it is done. Thanks for posting! Fran
