Howdy folks, Well, thought I'd post a Thanksgiving appropriate picture from my back yard. Turkeys deserve a little Thanksgiving feast too so I gave the critters a little extra meal. This is of course why we need game fencing. *L*. Turkeys here are much larger than the ones we had at the California ranch! If ya didn't fence them out of the planted part of the lot, you'd be knee deep in critter poop and they'd eat ya out of house and home. Love the little buggers though....Mel

Steve: Yep, normal feeding mob consists of about 20 turkeys, 20 whitetails including a couple of huge bucks and as many as ten or so Blackbuck. The whitetails don't allow the Blackbuck does to feed with them but they wait till later. The alpha mail Blackbuck feeds where and when he wants to cause he has some really nasty horns that even the3 big whitetail bucks don't fool with.....Mel

Your lucky to have all those animals so near Mel. I like turkeys. The only time I get to see them is when I go to AR.
Way back when I raised chickens. I put an old lawn chair beside the pen and would sit and watch them for hours. My wife knew from the beginning I was weird, but she only realized after that how truly weird I am.

Don't they fly over the fence? Or can't they get that high?
Turkeys here are close to becoming a nuisance to some folks, but I still get a kick out of seeing them. They drive songbirds out of the feeders. They're nowhere near as bad as the Canada Geese, though.

Chuck: They fly like sparrows, all 30 or so pounds of them. They mainly go where the feed is but they do sometimes come inside the yard. Not damaging like the deer though.
Roxy: The ranch is a 3000 acre game preserve. No hunting or shooting allowed so most all the critters are like pets. Cars are the major hazard. With all the holiday visitors, some a-hole ran over my favorite armadillo last night. It always tempted fate though. I chased it away from the road a bunch of times but he apparently crossed one time too many. And they're so darn slow and have such poor vision too...So sad!! * sniff sniff* I really liked the little bugger. He was cute as all get out....Mel
Also Rox, turkeys are spectacularly beautiful in the sun. All their feathers are highly metallic and color shift in full light. More color than a fire agate or opal!

Do your turkeys also gobble when you whistle to them? Ours seem to be able to do it forever, I always got tired whisteling before them gobbling ;D

Love turkeys. Here in southeastern PA they were non-existent for a long time but about 15 years ago they restocked them with turkeys from other parts of the state. They were surprised to find that they do very well living among us humans, although they aren't as friendly as yours. Its fun to see them fly.
