Howdy folks, Well I guess I'll go ahead and finish out the Mexican Lace agate. Steve and I posted some Royal Purple Aztec Lace awhile ago so I won't redo that one and I've still got to find another type of sort of pinkish purple crazy lace but here are some of the other types I missed. Thanks for looking.....Mel Quexacoatl Lace: Have no idea if I spelled that right *L* Kind of a brecciated Crazy lace usually with lots of red and yellow and the brown-silvery areas are hematite; Nodular Crazy Lace: This is the end slab and it got more pink and red towards the inside but I can't find the slabs. This type tends to onionskin quite a bit when you work it as the layers are less tightly sealed. This is called Fine Lined lace but is also similar on the exterior to Dogtooth or Bubble Lace. I think it's just a less colorful subvariety of Victor's lace. Amethyst Lace Agate from Durango, Mexico. Not to be confused with the Royal Purple Aztec Lace. This has lots of bands of larger megaquartz crystal. And finally, here are a couple of pics of Laguna Lace rough, also sometimes called red lace when it's a little less fancy. really well defined tight bands in intense colors throughout. Closer: OOps! Almost left one out. Seen this called Laguna lace too but also Black Crazy Lace:

Wow, I think if I had to pick one material it would be the crazy lace's, they are so beautiful, and they are so busy that if the cab isn't totally perfect you really can't tell. Great pics to show all the different kinds that are out there, thanks for taking the time to educate us. Amber

Boy Mel! Thanks a Ton for taking the time to give us all a Lace tutorial. Those are some amazing examples. I love that last one...I think because of the black coloring in it. It really shoots that patterns out to ya. So...what's the most common of all the Laces that you have mentioned??? Steve

Steve: At the shows and shops I've hit, including Quartzite, Noriega Lace is by far the most common but it kind of varies in a shop by shop basis depending on where the owner got his rough. Usually, there's some Cactus Lace mixed in.I used to drop almost all my rock allowance at a shop in Santa Barbara where the guy had come up with a drum of spectacular Dogtooth Lace with some red and black mixed in. Over a several months period I probably squirted every hunk of rough in that barrel 10 times. He was about $3 per pound which was incredibly expensive for lace back then. The dealer I liked at Quartzite had a veritable mountain of Noriega at like 50 cents per pound during the same period.
Good Nodular, Red and Black Crazy Lace have always been pretty scarce. A real plain variety of lace they called Little Snake Lace used to be cheap and common but had little appeal so you don't see it much anymore, same with Zebra, hard to find a good piece now days. If you can believe it, Royal Purple Aztec used to be fairly common and only $2 per pound. I hit a good pile of Victor's at a California show too and it is really nice stuff with lots of color. Laguna, whew, hardly ever see it and it's expensive. The pale pink-purple one, forgetaboutit, rarer than hens teeth now that the Chinese have staked out all the good Mexico claims. I do see Quexacoatal on e-bay now and then but I don't like it much as it can have lots of soft spots and waste. Greigars in LA used to have a mountain of Dying Lace but I seldom see it anymore either as folks bought it up for dying all kinds of weird colors like those Brazilans you see....Mel

They are all just beyond words, but I got to agree with many of the others who have listed the third and last as their favorites. Those two are just super examples.
Thanks for the pics and the descriptions of agate and its whereabouts of present and past.

Mary Ann: The same group of Mexican prospectors used to hit Quartzite, Nipomo, the big CFMS show and the Snyder Pow Wow every year but the last few times, they were no shows. I don't know if it's the price of gas, lack of material etc but I've heard the really good rock is being snapped up by the Chinese at the sources so maybe it's just easier to sell on site rather than drag a truck clear up from Mexico.. I do know that most of what I've seen at shows in the last few years is almost all cull material and of much lower quality than the old stuff I used to see. I went through a huge pile of Lace at the Bakersfield show last year and didn't find any I liked enough to buy....Mel

right now RocksJ2b2 has a red crazy lace that looks a bit like Mel's last pic, but the red areas are a bit larger and there is more 1cm dogtooth pattern. He is taking some to Quartzite, slabs too.

I'm sure I've said this before in similar threads but: the variety produced by nature *sure* is amazing!
