I placed an order with great rough and great slabs, which totaled almost $200 because I ordered gifts for Tony's stocking. Well some of the assorted bags didn't exactly contain what they specified, but it was OK, they sent nice stuff anyway, although I had selected the assortments for what they said they contained.
But I ordered Red Horn Coral that was $36/pound and it was crap, hardly any red in it. I sent an email, and basically he told me, "you never know what you are going to get", I thought that was pretty bad to say to a customer that spent that much money. I didn't even want my money back, I just thought maybe he would send me a piece or 2 of nice red coral I would have been happy with that.
I will not be ordering from them again, even though they do have nice stuff, because I just thought that was not the best customer service.

Red horn fossil coral is almost always covered in gray matrix, I'd cut through a couple of them before I'd say it was all crap....

I gotta agree with Steve ... when you need/want stuff, try to get it on RTH first. You've experienced that people here take good care of each other. If you told ANYONE here that you were not satisfied with a purchase, they'd bend over backward to make things right.

I have NEVER had a problem with www.greatslabs.com. I've purchased many slabs from them but, alas, no rough. It has always been quality material. FYI: www.stoneageindustries.com has Red Horn Coral for $18 a pound. Request cabbing quality and mention RTH. ;DS

Yeah, red horn coral can be a tough one. Like Rally stated, often the exterior is gray and covers good material. Sometimes though, gray or white ares that are not completely agatized run into the red and spoil it for cabbing. It's one of the materials I won't buy unless it's proven cabbing stuff I can have, in hand, to look at first. Many of the fossil gems are in this category and have incomplete silica replacement. ( turritella, Indian Script stone, Indonesian fossil coral etc) For that price, I would have thought it would be all good cabbing stuff with a good return policy as that's pretty darn steep...Mel

I learned a lesson, Tony did cut through it and out of a pound we have maybe 2 small pieces that are mostly red. I sent some to Ed, John, Steve, etc, people who were maybe better to see if I am really nuts. I was working on one and it has so much gray through it, it looks ugly. The slabs I purchased from great slabs were very nice though, and the lady on the phone was so nice and she wrapped everything so well, and included notes about cutting, so I felt bad and I really felt like they would do something to make me happy. I was sort of surprised at the response. I am not one to complain too much but that did tick me off. Thanks for all the info guys. Wycked- I will check that site, you mentioned. Ask SteveHolmes how he liked the cortez gold from greatslabs.com?? I have never had a problem with any of the people on here, I have ordered from Stones that Rock, Catman and Michael and they always take care of me They are the best!

well now... ;D Aztec Gold. I've never heard of it before and I'll never work with it again. I can't say it was great or bad rough..but when I was trimming it..it did end up having a big fracture through it....unless it's so terribly soft that it just falls apart. I felt like I was cabbing MUD>>>! Seriously! Some of the messisest stuff I've ever worked on. I couldn't get a polish on it...and when I was taking it off the dop...half of the bottom stayed stuck to the wax. So...my experience with Aztec Gold was not one of joy and happiness. ;D Steve

We need Mel to fill us in on that stuff, it is suppose to look nice. I am sorry Steve I know you said it made a big mess, I thought it looked earthy, I guess if it is mud that is why!!!
