I'm not likely to ever make one, but I'm sure many will be progressing that way, so:
What covering do you use on Carpet wheels?
Are they natural fibre carpets - Wool, Jute Sisal, or are they man made fibres - Polyester, Acrylic, Nylon?
Has anyone carried out a survey to test which fibres give the best results?

I use a carpet wheel for about 95% of my cabochon polishing. I have never tested differing types of carpet because the one that I use works so well for me. I use a piece of 1/4" thick standard office carpet and Cerium Oxide. I'm not sure exactly what the fiber is other than it is synthetic. I have been using this material for maybe 25+ years. Bob

I've used scraps of nylon carpet on sphere cups and they worked fine. If you have a choice I would think wool would work best as felt buffs generally outperform other buff materials. The biggest problem people have when making their own polish wheels are getting them balanced so they don't vibrate excessively rather than what material they cover them with.

My wheel is about 14" in diameter and it runs at about 350 rpm so balance hasn't been much of a problem. Bob

I've seen self=stick indoor-outdoorr carpet tiles used. They have a thin cushion backing and low pile so they don't soak up a lot of abrasive. The nylon stuff used in trunk lining might work too.
