I found this sorting my rock piles. It is covered with a chalk layer ans the inside looks like opal to me. It is very light for it's size, even lighter than the virgin valley opal I have. Thanks for any help, Geoff

Looks like opal to me. A lot of opal around here is found in diatomaceous eart that looks a lot like the matrix on your rock..................Bob

Thanks Bob. It is covered with diatomaceous earth. A Montana opal, that's awesome.

Geoff, does it have fire? It could be "common" opal (which just means non-precious, because precious means fire) or opalite (but I don't know the diff between opal and opalite either, Hmmmm).

The diatomaeceous earth pits at George, Washington have opal nodules like this although most of the opal is in seams. Woody

The outside looks like some flint nodules I have. The insides of what I have is much darker but the texture looks the same as this one.

There is no fire, actually the opal just crumbles when I cut it. I broke it into 2 nice display pieces, that's all I can really do with it. I have a large mineral collection and I don't mind adding to it.
