Last night I posted pictures of 49 Cabochons on my web site hoping that I could get some help identifying some of the materials they were made from. I have made a few of these cabs but most of them came from a collection I purchased some time ago. Any help I can get with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. www.pebblepup.com/49-cabochons-photographs

I shall have a good long think on the ones you haven't identified yet, it was fun to see your collection. You got some amazing stones in that gallery! Hope you can pin them down soon!
Cheers,
Sparkles.

OK here are a few of them for ya. Botswana #1 and #3 look like Brazilian Agate to me not Bots. Unknown # 14 is African Queen Picture jasper,Unk #4,5, 12 all appear to be wonderstone varieties. Unk#26 is Mariposite Unk #16 might be verde antique or one of the other yellow dolomite type marbles. Unknown #6 looks like Rocky Butte Picture Jasper. All those red jasper types could be from almost anywhere in the west and the rest have me stumped...Mel
PS: I think Steve's right on that first one, Morrisonite not Wildhorse

Thank you for the help. The first Cabochon is without a doubt Wild Horse Jasper; I made that one myself and also collected the material from the mine myself.

Here is the rough chuck that the first cabochon came from. This remaining chunk of jasper is about 10 pounds.

Wow! My monitor must be way off. I've never had any Wildhorse with dark areas that dark gray-green and that orby look. Very cool piece anyway. Just goes to show you how much variety can be had from a single site....Mel

Stonesthatrock, That could be Wildhorse jasper. Actually , most of the material I have seen from that location looks more like the material you are showing than the material I am showing.

Hmmm, hard to say then. Could be from Burro Creek maybe? Could be from the claim up on a mountain near Death Valley that's owned by the Ventura rock club? Almost impossible to say for sure, since there's not much on the cab to distinguish it.

I don't know much on identities but I do know what I like and I really like your website. Those cabs you show are really beautiful.
