This relates to "navi's" post under the "Glossary of Terms" forum pertaining to agate, chalcedony, chert, flint, jasper, mixes etc. identification and naming. After seeing all your wonderful photos of a wide variety of rocks, I began to think, "Uh oh, I've thrown away some good stuff." I'm embarrassed to admit I ran out to the discard pile, pulled these out and cleaned them a bit. ;D ;D A local guy told me they were junk, but I wonder if he's a Laker only kind of guy. They are not your classic Lakers and are 3-10lbs. Are all agates up here Lakers or can there be other kinds of agates? What's your best guess? I'm far from a Laker expert but I do believe there are Lake Superior Nodules that are not necessarily banded agates. I've seen good moss, tube etc and some that grade into more of a jasper but are still real nice. I think you were wise to reclaim those you've posted as most of them appear to be real fine agate even if not banded. I think they all show good promise except maybe #3 which looks to be pretty fractured and #6+11 which look to have pitting and soft spots which might render them less usable.....Mel

You will be surprised how some of those slab and polish up. Love laker's but can't find them all the time. That "junk" is sure nice to find on a day when no laker's are found. That is why I started bringing some of that home. Found out it is nice stuff so now I look for that kind of rock and laker's. It's all good........MrP

Mel...The agate material in 6 is encrusted in some kind of sandstone. Crumbles all over. I'm not sure if I'll pick it apart or leave as a display piece. Does it make any difference if the fractures are filled or healed, as far as working with the rock? akansan...I did out of ignorance! Man...I'm glad I stumbled across this site! MrP...No question about it, there is more of this stuff than Lakers. I honestly don't think it gets hounded up here as much. The people I've met so far seem to be Lakers or nothin'. Some of those frustrating empty pack days just got a whole lot more interesting. Thanks guys!

Northshore: If the fractures are filled or healed, the stone will hold together and polish. Sometimes the fractures detract from the finished stones appearance but that's purely a matter of taste.....Mel
