When I visited my in-laws in July, I brought some of my tumbled rocks to show my mother-in-law. She really liked the amethyst, so I set out to make some for her for the holidays. Five months later, they are finally coming out! As you can see, I did not start with particularly high quality tumbling rough: I followed my usual formula: 10-12 5-day rounds of 60/90 SC coarse, 7 days in 120/200 SC medium, 10 days in 500 SC pre-polish, 10 days in 1000 AO pre-polish, 2 weeks in AO polish, and a final burnish. Here are the results: Here are some of my favorite individual stones: Keep in mind that these photos were taken indoors with standing room lighting (very little sunshine here in NH!) so the shine doesn't come through as well as it could. I know that amethyst is a notoriously difficult stone to work with, so I am generally pleased with how it came out. And I'm sure that my mother-in-law will like it. But, most importantly, it helps to justify those extra tumblers that I bought. :-)

My favorite is the big one in the middle of the last one. Did you super glue that one together? LOL. Just kidding. She'll love them... and the fact that you now have justification... priceless. JO

I completed a second batch of amethyst from that same rough today. Here are some photos (again, it's hard to photograph the shine well when using regular indoor lighting!): Thanks for looking!

Hi, Tony. I believe I purchased it as "banded amethyst" from Dad's Rock Shop.
