Last August, we went hiking on a local hill and collected some quart/quartzite. I smashed it up with a sledgehammer into tumbler size. Here is what the rough looked like. The first photo shows the local quartz next to some purchased pure quartz for comparison: Here is the starting rough: The material was fairly tough, so it took over 10 rounds in coarse. Here is how they looked at the end of the coarse rounds: I then followed my usual formula (see previous posts), and about 4 months after that hike I pulled them out today: Here are some closeups on my favorite ones: Please keep in mind that these photos were taken under standard indoor lighting and so don't show off the shine as well as they would if we ever had any sunshine in Dec. in NH! :-) Is there any more satisfying feeling than making nice smooth shiny polished rocks starting from material that you collected locally for free? I've got a tumbler's high. :-)

Excellent! I absolutely agree with the total satisfaction you get from self collecting!

Good job - always amazing to me when something that look soooooo plain to start turns out soooo nice.

Heh heh. Not much! In truth, we have about 9 hours between sunrise and sunset this close to the winter solstice. The week that I completed these tumbles, I kept waiting for a sunny day to take some better photos, but one never came around. It was always overcast. So I guess my comments reflect the grumpiness brought on by too little sunlight!
