Hello, everyone! Here is an idea of a rather different contest. Paul - rockrookie, it is only an IDEA and even if it would become a contest it will be a very long one, so I think you better do not count it in your "Lucky Looser" contest. Now let me explain what I have in mind (well, you could reply here "We already know - lots and lots of rocks" ;D ) I'd like to build two wire trees with the leaves made as grooved wrapped cabs. Of course I would need at least 100 cabs for each tree. I will keep one of the trees and the other one will be the prize of a "guess the weight" or, even better, of a "name it" contest. But to make those trees really special, I need you folks who would like to compete to send me at least two "leaves", one for each tree. Any of the sender of "leaves" could win the tree. The "leaves should be already polished cabs or tumbled pre-forms, looking like a leaf, having about 1...2 cm long (1/2 to 1 inch long) and the thickness at least 5 mm. Remember I must make the groove on their contours so that's why I would need those 5 mm thickness. It's hard to put together 100 competitors (I said 100 leaves without any experience, maybe our tree expert Roan could help us with some advices here), so you are very welcome to send more than 2 leaves and I would dedicate a whole branch of the tree to a more generous competitor . I also think it would be nice that everyone to sign on the leaves with his/her name or nickname, it would make the tree really special. You can use a permanent thin marker for this purpose. I will use copper wire, it is needed a lot of wire and of course I cannot use silver. There would be some more details like the color of the leaves (either green or fall colors) and the shape of the leaves, but let's see how many of you would like to participate. And speaking about "many", it would be a problem for me to receive so many boxes, even if small (every box that I receive I have to pay about $1.5 for it at the PO, storage taxes). So I would kindly ask one of you to gather all the small sendings from USA and Canada and send them to me. The other members from UK, Serbia and from elsewhere could send them to me separately. I bet you all realize this would be a long term contest, not the contest itself but especially its preparation. So, if the idea will catch, I will kindly ask Mark or John to stick this thread. But time will tell. Thanks for reading and I hope we will have fun and it will work till the end. Adrian PS. Please post here if you want to jump in. If some of you also has any idea which could improve this contest, you're welcome to post it here.

Adrian, I think it's a GREAT IDEA! I'd be more than willing to participate. I can only imagine with whatever design you come up with it will be spectacular! and definitely worth a shot of winning. Steve

Adrian, that is an awesome idea. I would love to contribute but it would be things I have received or bought as I'm not a tumbler/cabber yet. Is that alright?
Also, one suggestion, if the donated cabs/tumbles are to be sent to one central address in the US first and then sent to you, perhaps the people who donate can also include a dollar or or two to defray the cost of shipping the package to you. It's just a thought.
This would be a really fun thing to watch while you create it.

Adrian: WOW, someone would be really lucky to win that tree!!! I think it sounds like a beautiful idea You could work on it all year to have it as a Christmas gift next year. I know it will be amazing!!!! We all spend so much at the PO, I think the more expensive issue would be you shipping the final product to the winner. Certainly someone will come up with a good way of doing this. Amber

Adrian, this is one cool idea. I will gladly chip in a leaf or two (or a dozen). I will be very envious of whoever wins this one.

Lori, you'd be more than welcome to come to my place to cab up some leaves. I'd love to participate, as well. I could certainly send several leaves, maybe even more. I'd also be willing to be the keeper of leaves and send them on to you, Adrian. I'm in Massachusetts, so I'm not central to the US folks. Don't know if that matters or not.

Thank you floks, I consider it is a great start. Lori, your idea with one or two dollars is great and it will put less pressure to the person who is going to send me the box. Titania, thank you for offering to be the sender. I hope you will have a pretty big box for me Please feel welcome everyone to announce your intention of participating, it only takes two small green cabs and the tree might be yours. Anyway, there's plenty of time to decide, I think I will leave the list opened untill the first decade of January and then really start the action and, hopefully, the fun Adrian

Hmmm ... I'm a prospector / miner / rockhound, but not a cabber. If anyone cabs but doesn't have material for the leaves, I'd be happy to send you some nice slabs if you will make the cabs for both of us and send them on to Titania. I have lots of good greenies, including turquoise, chrysocolla/malachite, apple green alabaster, jade, etc etc etc. You can then keep whatever you don't use for the leaves.

Rogue, Michael, Paul,
I think it doesn't matter what kind of green would it be, it only has to be green. In fact, that would be the charm of that tree, to have rocks coming from everywhere. So, any green rock would work. Michael, I'm sure you will find someone to help you with two cabs.
In my first post I said we still have to agree about the color of the leaves, that could be either green or fall colors. I see the trend is to like the idea of green leaves, which is great because it symbolises the power and the health, but fall colors would fit better with the copper wire that I plan to use and it would give you more options about the colors, which might be yellow, orange, brown or such.
So, it's not set yet, you are welcome to come here with your opinions about what colors would work best.
Thank you all for your interest,
Adrian

Adrian, I think you could mix green and "autumn colors". That's often how trees actually are in nature. How well they all go together to look right would just depend on your placement. For the most part, just about any color other than pink, purple, and white should blend well, as long as the shades of colors are not too bright and glaring. The best suggestion I can make is that you request that all leaves be very close to the same size, as that factor alone will ensure the best overall unity.
Green would be the BEST color with copper. When copper oxidizes, it's green. When there's a lot of green in turquoise or chrysocolla, it's due to the dominance of copper in the surrounding soil and stone. That's why the chrysocolla from my Blue Mule Mine is predominantly green ... the whole mountain is extremely rich in copper, with relatively little other mineralization.
You may even want to experiment with a little copper ... by repeatedly misting it with water, it will oxidize. This might give a "mossy" look to the tree that you may like. This will also cut-down on the shine of the copper, allowing more attention to be drawn to the shiny leaves.

OK, MichaelJohn, you brought in a very solid argument for green, so let's set it green, friends! Anyway, if some of you don't find any green material, some yellow or brown or other fall colors would also look nice, like MichaelJohn said. Here's the shape that I'm kindly asking you to follow, not exactly but at least basically. I think the size of the leaves should not exceed 15 mm, for a reasonable scaling. I also set the 10 mm lower limit because it's pretty difficult to work with very small cabs. Adrian

I'll send you a pm. Thank you so much. Adrian, looks like your going to be making trees yippee!

Thank you everyone again for joining the fun. No need to hurry yet, let's keep the joining list open until January 10 or such. Then in the remaining days of January you could make the cabs. February is a pretty busy month for me so you don't have to send the cabs to me before the end of Feb. You could send them of course to the "Main Sender" a bit earlier.
One more thing, please! When you join, please specify the maximum number of leaves you could give for this project (even number of course). It looks like the number of leaves needed exceeds the number of competitors, so more than two leaves per person would be welcome, I think.
Adrian
