Bobby that is a terrific specimen! I've never seen one with the botryoidal top and bottom and all the exterior colors. Looks like a cross between fire agate and obsidian. Too cool!....Mel

That is too cool! I love the little bubble areas all over it! Makes me think of fossils against it...OK I have a good imagination. Beautiful specimen! Fran

It would make some awesome cabs, but I'm not inclined to cut it up. I have been studying this piece for about 5 years so far and I want to somehow sand and polish the surface but retain the surface features. Maybe bead blasting with ever finer grits might do something. I tried sand blasting a piece of Obsidian with a coarse grit to remove some surface irregularities but all it did was frost the surface. More experimenting to do. Bob

Good gravy Bob! That is truly an amazing piece of rainbow.
Perhaps using something like a Baranca wet-polisher with only the finer grits to polish it? I've got a couple chunks of central California brecciated jasper yard-rocks that I sprayed with silicone lube; that helped bring out the natural colors and keep the wet-but-not-quite-polished look.

WOW Bob: Now that is cool, all those pretty purple colors, as much as I know you would make some darn nice cabs, I agree that is too pretty to cut, wow!!

Hey Bob, what did you decide to do with that piece of purple rainbow obsidian you posted on back in2008?

I don't recall which piece of Purple Obsidian that I posted but I think that I used it for making the Cats Eye cabs for the obsidian article that I wrote for the July issue of Lapidary Journal. Bob

OOPS! I didn't look at the first posting in this thread. No, I didn't cut it up. Never will! I have too many other "non specimen" pieces to use for my cabs. Bob

Bob, I'm glad that you didn't cut it up. From all the rainbow Obsidian that I have seen, that one is by far a one of a kind.
