Howdy folks, Was out with the camera again today and on a bright sun shiny day like this I was reminded that someone here actually said wild turkeys are homely ( actually ugly*S*). Well, I of course just had to stick up for my pals the turkeys ( us turkeys have to stick together!). Out of all U.S. birds, the turkeys have to have some of the most beautiful metallic feathers around and in fact, many of their fish scale like iridescent feather patterns remind me of those found in boulder opals. Here are a few pics as proof!....Mel Close up shot. Walking boulder opal right? *L*

Turkey Opals! You have just discovered a new gemstone, or is it Opal Turkeys? Bob

Dang Mel...I wouldn't know which tools to grab leaving your house. Camera, rock tools, camera, rock tools...I'd just grab both sets just in case! LOL!!! What a great place to live.

Hey, I never said they didn't have purty FEATHERS, haha. And they are much prettier than the plain white domestic ones. Smarter, too! We've had a population explosion in my area; you know it's bad when the NE game & parks places ads in the local papers hyping turkey season. There's some amazing art stuff featuring turkey feathers.

Wasn't it Thomas Jefferson who felt the wild turkey should be the national bird? (Far too long since school!) They do have beautiful coloring and you are right, they remind you of BO. Fran

Mel, what subspecies of turkey are they? They seem to have more bronze than the ones in my neck of the wood.

Jo: *L* Naw I don't think so . My dad was a taxidermist and I were raised on wild food. Wild turkeys are a bit tough and stringy for my taste and less breast meat too.
Northshore: These are the Rio Grande subspecies. The eastern and southeastern ( Merriams) subspecies usually are a lot darker....Mel

Fran I'm thinking it was Benjamin Franklin,,,I read a lot of biographies. Yep, it's a beautiful bird, whether wild on the range or straight from the oven. I'm a carnivore....
