I picked-up a few nice chunks of this green stuff. I have no clue what it is, but it's kinda pretty and very plentiful. A lot of the mountains just south of Death Valley are primarily comprised of this crumbly stuff ... most of it's the yellowish stuff, like in the first pic, but some of it's reddish, like the other pics. What is it? Thanks for your help!

The second one looks granitic (granite) to me. Hard to tell from photos often times though. Yellowish or redish tint could be iron oxide (or other metallic oxides) staining it.

Nope, not granite. It's very crumbly. The agate in this area comes from this stuff, in seams and nodules. The somewhat famous agate collecting location, Sagenite Canyon, is almost entirely comprised of the yellowish stuff. Edit: LOL here's a pic from Dzrtgrls at Sagenite Canyon, alledgedly finding agate just hanging out of the rock like this, and alledgedly not taking it (((COUGH)))bullshit(((COUGH)))... BTW, in a couple of hours, I didn't find ANY agate there that wasn't just someone's Leaverite, sitting on the ground.

It could be granite, once it's old enough it goes rotten, actually becomes quite crumbly. I do believe that the mountain range in the death valley area is actually shrinking. So the age thing could be right. I may be wrong I've learnt other stuff since then so may be getting confused. Simon
