Here's some of the haul from the New Years Day Hound in Northern Minnesota! forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/index.cgi?board=locations&action=display&thread=27233&page=1Please chime in if you can identify a rock or if I have identified incorrectly! Is this Porphyry worth gathering? Red JaspersA chunk of Smokey QuartzThis picture doesn't do this rock justice. We've just been calling it the Zebra rock. Any guess? Jasper/Agates? The next 2 are of the Red Jasper pictured in the previous post Lakers Thanks Again!...Steve & Kayla

Wow you found awesome rocks and in the middle of winter. I love that "Zebra" stone and the red in the jasper is amazing.

You really found a lot of wonderful rocks! I am hoping that Sabre52 will chime in on those first few. They look fantastic so I would love to see what he and others that really know about rocks have to say. Hmm, all that white snow and beautiful color found. Thanks for sharing with us! Fran

Nice rocks, I can't believe you went collecting in Minnesota this time of year. You must have froze.

Great haul but all that snow is friggin crazy! I'd be huddled in the house in front of the fire with 12 blankets on top of me. That is some hard core rockhounding!
As far as the ID's go looks like you got into some wild rock in that quarry as well as all the jasper and agate. Those first ones do look like a porphyry ( some folks call it flowering gabbro) with included crystals probably of feldspar. In Calif. we had similar stuff we called chinese writing stone. Some specimens work up real nice as cabs. The wavy gray and white one looks like gneiss but being tumbled, shoot, it might be something else too ( looks metamorphic though) Many of those undercut but if full of silica can be solid too. You won't know till you try and work it up. Rest of the stuff I think you've pretty much got. Lots of jaspers and agate which looks pretty nice for being whacked out of a friggin deep freeze *L*....Mel

Thanks for the I.D. help Mel! The cold isn't too bad. You can dress for it. The problem is wading through the snow with all those clothes on and toting 50lbs of rock! LOL! I wonder if I can google a Winter hounding rock sled?
