Hello rock hounders...what a great a great discovery for me to find this group! I am VERY new as a meber as of today and I am one of those "artist types" who is always looking to expand their means of creativity. I have long heard of Quartzite but have recently heard of Madras, Oregon as a rock event in July. Have any of you heard of this? It sure is a lot closer to me than Quartzite since I am in Eugene. I have begun to look into some the forums hear and have to say what a great resource it is for us novices. Thanks for any reply.

Hi and welcome to the greatest rock board on the net. I have been to Quartzite but not Madras though I have heard it is a very good rock show my take on the show is that it is more of local rocks which is good as its in a prime rock area.Quartzite is not as big as it was a few years ago but you can still find many rocks there that come from all over the world. The best and largest rock show is in Tucson Arizona. Nothing comes close to the size of this rock show many dealers from all over the world make this show if you like rocks this show is a must at least once in your life it last 2 weeks and you can not see everything in one show it will knock your socks off as far as just a pure rock experience. I am sure someone will be along to give you more input on all of these places. George

The Madras rockhound Pow-wow is held over the July 4th weekend, usually Wed-Sun. It is an awesome show! The focus is on Northwest materials and deals abound. They also have daily field trips to the local ranches for collecting pet wood, agate, thundereggs, jasper, etc. I highly recommend it since you live so close. Usually the weekend before Madras is the Prineville Rockhound Pow-wow, which is also spectacular. These shows typically have 50-100 dealers.

The WAMS club has a rock show on April 17-19 in Rickreall, OR at the Polk County Fairgrounds. Small show, good people, nice displays, good selections of local dealers and materials. Give it a shot! www.wamsi.org/pages/rog.html

Yes I highly suggest visiting the Madras show. It's fantastic and has lots to look at. I have fliers in my shop for the 2009 dates. I'll get a copy and paste it for you folks! Madras is a little over an hour from home for me... and besides the good show they also offer field trips to various locations during the days. Another cool thing to visit is the Ashwood Rock Stock. It's where private ranches open pay to dig in Ashwood, Oregon. You can dig Thundereggs, Pet. Wood, Agate, Jasper Ect.... the website is www.ashwoodrockstock.com I don't know if the site's been updated yet, but it happens over Memorial Day weekend! You'll see my down around hunting for Thundereggs during the weekend! Jason

I also highly recommend visiting the Madras event. Karen and I went one year, there were over 50 vehicles caravaning out to the collecting areas in the mornings! So many different places to collect, all within a fairly close drive.
