Drool, Drool, I am liking that! The first photo, black jade. Is it mined or can anyone find it? Wyoming jade is famous for its felted jade. Would love to find a chunk I could carve. Haven't the clue on what the rules are there.

I never knew you had so much jade there in Wyoming! It seems to have even tumbled well and the cabs are beautiful so I am really liking the stuff you find there! Thanks for sharing! Fran

Thanks all... That edwards black jade is a specimen from my dad's collection, it came from a location that is currently closed to collecting. However many very similar pieces can be found in other locations. I'm currently working on a baseball sized piece of very pure black jade we found this fall. Actually a lot of the nephrite in Wyoming is considered "black", although it is difficult to find specimens as dark and as pure as the jade from the edwards area. The apple green variety is much more difficult to come by these days. It's the most sought after, and the areas where it is found have been picked pretty clean over the decades. However, the area it can be found is vast, and not as many people look for it now. New surface erosion is exposing undiscovered specimens all the time, so if one is paitent and willing to travel off the beaten path a bit, it can still be found. As for carving, Wyoming nephrite is ideal for it, because it is usually considerably more pure than nephrite found anywhere else in the lower 48. Here is a link, it has a picture of a horse carved into a thin slab of apple green wyoming nephrite... www.wsgs.uwyo.edu/gemstones/jade.aspx

yeah, the black jade is awesome...I always am happy when I find a nice pure piece of black jade....(actually, it isn't really black, it's just a very dark, opaqe green...you can see this if you slice it very thin and hold it up to a bright light...interesting factiod about black jade )
