I would say the first ones are B. C. Jade -- there are many varities of color, but these look like alot of the ones I have ---think they are harder than a 4 tho ---- would prob turn out best if dia paste was used to grind them and leather with polish to buff them out I'll let someone else have a go at the jasper one! ;D

Thanks Snowdog, The reason I say 4 is that Obsidian scratches it.

Hmmm. Obsidian is mohs 5 and should not scratch jade. We use a hard knife blade or nail at about 5 1/2 or so mohs to check to see if we're finding jade or serpentine. You could have serpentine there as often the two look much the same except for hardness. Sure has the look of jade though in the pic.....Mel

OK, I think a penny is about mohs 3.5 and that would not even scratch serpentine. Knife blade can vary in hardness but most are about mohs 5 1/2 and should not scratch jade. The steel from a blade rubs off on the jades I have. Jade does vary in hardeness too thoug, mohs 5-6 depending on type and really hard jade is 6 1/2. So, looks like you have a serpentine or a jade softer than 51/2. When we mined nephrite at the old Janoko Jade mine at Porterville, CA, we sometimes found serpentine that looked just like jade except for the hardness....Mel
