OK, now that top one is stromatolite . Looks like the stuff from around Wamsutter, Wy. Can't tell much about the second example. if you'd said it had copper colored flecks, I'd think it's one of those neat native copper rich mixtures that polish up really nice called Mohawkite. Gold flecks usually means pyrite to me or sometimes even a muscovite mica mix which sometimes has gold sparkles...Mel

Thanks, Mel. I have a lot of that stromatolite from cutter, and I just wasn't positive what it was...

The second one looks like Hypersthene to me. I don't have any but I have seen it on rockslabs.com. It seems to have the same patterns that you have there. Just a guess. Fran

How hard is that Stromatolite ? We find them here in Iowa but they are as soft as the Limestone we get them out of . Ours haven't the wild patterns either !

The Wyoming Stromatolite is hard - jasper hard.
