Well, I just finished cleaning all the rocks after 6 days of tumbling in 60/90 grit. I have a couple questions. First off, I spent about an hour or so brushing each rock with an old toothbrush, and examining it under a magnifying glass. I know this wasn't quite necessary for the rocks that were obviously needing more tumble, but I did it so there wouldn't be as much gray in the pics. Quite a few of the rocks that I sent back in for another tumble were great except for a tiny pinhole sized pit or two. Was this the right thing to do or would that have been taken care of in later stages? I know the rocks are of different hardness as I didn't even check them before the tumble. I'll have to pay more attention to that in the future. These were just some of the rocks we picked up while camping last summer. I didn't really expect them to turn out to be much. After spending hours and hours reading through this forum, I feel I have learned a lot, but I also have a long way to go. Thank you all for your help. Here are some pics of the batch so far. All comments are very much welcome.
I'm sure everyone has seen this before, fresh out of the barrel
The barrel is holding up great so far
Here are the sorted rocks. Left is going back in, right is ready for stage 2.
These are going back in for more tumbling
These are ready for stage 2. There are some cool stripes at 3 o'clock. The rock at 5 o'clock looks like it says EVIL on it.
I added about half of these to the barrel to fill it back up to 3/4.
I was going to put this one in, then I thought of that saw I've been looking for and I think this will be the first rock I cut.
So that's it for now. They're back in the tumbler. Like I said before, any and all comments are welcome. Also, if you can identify any of the rocks I'd appreciate it. I think I know what a couple of them are, but most are just pretty rocks to us.
Thanks for looking
Steve
