Salem,Oregon is a pile of gravel from the last glacier flood.
Oregon's best red comes from the area around the Sweethome,Oregon area.
Though the Chahalis river west of Aberdeen washington at the 12 mile marker has some of the best red i have ever seen, and the 3rd ridge east of the castle rock exit on I-5. area has some nice red carnelian agate. enhydros. Then south to CottageGrove Res. their is a huge amount of Red Carnelian In Med. - very dark agate to be found less then a foot under ground, The last time i dug their i could not dig more then a two foot hole i had dug more the 800 hundred Lbs. out in less the two hours digging.
The only rock hunting in Salem Oregon is at the dealers in the Salem area. And the river bars in town.

Salem's good for finding small pieces every now and then. The majority of silicified material on the rivers near here is beige and red colored jasper followed by clear agate, yellow agate(sard), petrified wood, then carnelian. The carnelian around here is usually just a rusty orange coating on the agate, for what it's worth. Cut 'em open and they're simply yellow or clear inside.

With the exception of Brazilian carnelian that has been fire treated to colour it, most natural carnelian is lighter on the inside, at least here in the PNW. With some creative cutting of the outside layer, you can get some nice deep color. I 'discovered' this by noticing that my heel cuts were the best material. Woody
