What do you guys do with the oily sludge generated in sawing, after filtering and recycling the oil?

You know that annoying overhanding tree the neighbor has, tell him you have a new fertilizer that does wonders on tree's, and you want to show him.
I use water, so I just dump my sludge in the back yard, let it dry, then spread it out.

If your garbage goes to a local Burner ( Like Covanta Energy / Ogden Martin ) there world wide for the disposal of garbage here in the Salem,Oregon area the plant is in Brooks.
In 2001 the plant had ran their 100 million-th ton through the plant.
I mix dirt with the sludge in a five gallon bucket / with lid on tight.
Then it goes into a burner, the fireing deck is 1395 F. and it comes out dust.
Though the ash pile is the HAZMAT Mess.
The only other way would be hazardous waste / the cost though is around $15.00 a Lb.
Our leave it in a metal five gallon bucket in the middle of a large fire to roost of the oil.

What kind of oil do you use?I use mineral oil so after I filter it out I just dump it way out in the backyard where a lot of weeds grow in the summer. If you're using a petroleum base product you might not want to do that.In my town the fire dept. has a hazmat collection every few months or so.That might be an option if they do something like that in you're area.

I use food-grade mineral oil, is it ok to dump it in a hole or is it still hazmat?

You could take it to a used motor oil recycle place.

No diff than the heavy metals in used oil and less toxic to. You ever clean a oil pan? If you happen to live in a area that has Oilwells, there should be a disposal site close by. They should have a spill pile ( contaminated dirt) they would let you throw it on. Thats where I plan to take mine. Cost about 1 box of donuts.

I read somewhere that you can do this: 1. place sludge in a large pail. fill pail with boiling hot soapy water (might be better to use a metal pail and boil everything in that) 2. use an electric drill powered paint stirrer and really mix this stuff up. 3. let sit for a while and things will stratify, clean cuttings on the bottom, followed by soapy water and finally the last of the oil on top. 4. separate the oil and water, dispose of the cuttings in trash. I haven't tried this yet as I don't have a large enough quantity of sludge to try it on. Jim
