- Topaz is a silicate mineral with a Mohs hardness of 8. The blue topaz is the birthstone for the month of December and is the Texas state gemstone. It is often cut with the Lone Star cut - the Texas state gemstone cut showing a star in the heart of the gem. Topaz very rarely occurs blue naturally. Typically, colorless, gray or pale yellow material is heat treated and irradiated in order to turn it blue. It has an easy and perfect basal cleavage, meaning that gemstones or other fine specimens have to be handled with care to avoid developing cleavage flaws.
