If the outside is softer than the inside (the dark part), I'd guess flint/flint nodule for the inner section. You should be able to see cell structure in bone, either agatized or not. If not agatized, there's also a possibility all you would be able to see would be the cells...

EarthDog .... I know .... looks like meaty snacks for dogs.
However ......... this thing is hard, as hard as a geode.
I have tried to crack or split this open and cannot.
Mind you .... I do not have all the tools I need to crack this baby open.
But .... it is very hard ....

I wonder if it is a limbcast. My sister bought me two and they look much like yours where the outer part is white and there is a very round darker center. I'm probably all wrong but offering my :2cents:

lol. Not rooted in Sweeny Todd but it does or shall I say did have roots. Basically it's a petrified limb of a tree (I think) ;D
Where did you find or purchase this. Because it does look a lot like what I have but more smoothed down as if tumbled in a creek.

A limbcast is generally a form of fossilized wood. Technically it is where a limb/root/trunk was deposited, then rotted away leaving a cavity which was later filled with agate forming a cast of wood. Typically limb casts will show definition of the bark structure but no interior cell structure whereas true fossil wood will show cell structure. This piece does not look to me like a limbcast. Although the pictures are not too clear, it also does not look like bone to me. The inner part of bone, where marrow is at, is definitely separate like your piece but not usually as large as yours appears as far as I know. Also, does the outer portion show any cell structure? Typically bone, even fossilized, will show a porous look. To me it looks more like a form of concretion. Dean
