I have been working for two weeks now on several preforms. On a flat lap, it sure takes a lot of time! Once I finally got them all worked through to the 3000 grit lap, I did a pre polish this time yesterday and then the polish today. The flourite was the first casualty that will have to be reworked Then I worked a yellow Onyx that is also soft. It got two tiny heat fractures on the top left and right Then I had 2 yellow aventurine and 2 blue quartz fly off their dop sticks every time I turned around. Got them mostly polished but they need a lot more. I have two scratches from them flying off. Then I worked some Lapis Lazuli. The one on the right has a lot of pyrite in it and the one on the left looks like it has little white cracks but it is really just the stone. Here is a serpentine that I did. It is really soft also and has a lot of black in it that was hard to get to polish I am going to devide these up and put the rest in a different post. Fran

OOooh Fran! You've got a great shape and shine on them. Can't wait to see what you do with that fluorite. Love the lapis! The serpentine took a nice polish. Great work!

Fran: Welcome to my world of flying stones!!! I feel for ya, it is hard when you work so hard and things crack!! But what you have is looking really good, I love the middle 2 lapis, the yellow and blue quartz are really nice too!!! You have been busy! Amber

Outstanding job on cabs...first one has a lot of banded colors that bring out the shape you chose.

Man, you are really doing good! I like them all. And you are smart to work on a bunch at a time...that way when something goes wrong you can just continue on with the next and not get too upset by it. And best of all....sometimes they all go just as planned and it is a great feeling to have a dozen finished stones at the same time come off the arbor Tony

You're really coming along. Flourite is tough because it is so soft but its so pretty. I'm dop challenged too.

Thank you Everyone! I am really trying to get a technique down that will work well with this flat lap. It is just taking time. I really like the flourite so I am going to have to rework that end and get it looking nice. Fran

Fran,
Really good effort on some (sometimes) difficult materials.......I started with an Inland machine. Funny thing was, when I stepped up to a regular cabber I was kinda bummed. I had gotten used to those flat laps!!

You are doing great work on what are some difficult materials to cab. I don't have the problem of stones flying off the dop as I have never been patient enough to put a stone on a dop lol I just grab them with my fingers and start grinding. I also have no thumbnails. lol
