I finished up my first batch of pet wood over the weekend. I started here I ran 2 weeks in 60-90 grit then 1 week in 120-220. I then did a full week each in prepolish and polish, finishing with about 5 hours in borax. Curt commented earlier that he had had little luck getting a good polish on the black wood and that proved true for me. Most of the other colors took a pretty good polish. I did get enough nice stones to fix up a bowl for my friend who brought the rocks. thanks for looking. Bob

Bob, That is a great batch! I just started a load myself; I think I'll follow your recipe! Thanks! Dan

Bob
A lot of that black has microscopic pits in it and is why it won't polish. Some of it is solid and polishes very well. The more you work with it, the better you will be able to recognize which ones will and won't.
Nice batch!

Beautiful batch! All are very nice but those ones with black and red are my favorites. They also look more compact.

Wow, that's some pretty material! I'm amazed you got them shaped that well in just two weeks coarse grind. Good job!

That is a very nice batch of wood! It really worked up pretty quick and you have some very nice pieces there even though the black gave you problems. Great Job! Fran

John, All of this came from Desoto Parish, just south of Shreveport.

Wow, I didn't know that Louisiana produced such fine petrified wood. Do you get much agatized or opal wood? Are these mostly crick-found or dug?

What I have pictured here all came off of a friends farm just south of me. He just picks it up while walking around. I saw him today. He told me that he stumbled over a flower bed border at his home place and the border is all pet wood. Got to go see that.
