Here is the third official puzzle in Lady B's Rocking Sudoku!!! Contest.
This is a not-quite-so-easy Three-Star Puzzle.
This third puzzle is The Rock Category, and the Keyword for this puzzle is: GRANULITE.
- Granulites are fine to medium–grained metamorphic rocks that have experienced high temperatures of metamorphism, composed mainly of feldspars. They are of particular interest to geologists because many granulites represent samples of the deep continental crust. Some granulites experienced decompression from deep in the Earth to shallower crustal levels at high temperature; others cooled while remaining at depth in the Earth.
Granulite (Latin granulum: "a little grain") is a name used by petrographers to designate two distinct classes of rocks. The more popular geological designation for granulite means a more or less banded, fine-grained metamorphic rock, consisting mainly of quartz and feldspar in very small irregular crystals and usually also containing a fair number of minute, rounded, pale-red garnets. It is this type of granulit that is represented in the photo above. Many of us here at RTH have specimens of this form of granulite in our personal collections.
