Howdy folks, I wear a lot of bola ( or is it bolo?) ties and find a few shed antlers on my walks. Here's an easy little tie to make by just sawing the crown for the antler, taking a nice tumbled slab (in this case, an eye from a Coyamito agate), marking the horn, carving out a hole with your rotary tool and gluing in the stone with epoxy. I bedded the stone in a little plastic wood too to fill any gaps and rubbed a bit of shoe polish into the antler to darken the color a bit. Then you just screw a bola slide on the back with tiny little screws, cut off a couple of antler tips for the bola cord tips, drill them, glue them on and ya got you a weird looking tie *S*. Same thing can be done for a belt buckle on a larger scale using an elk antler crown and a larger slab.....Mel

Thats really cool Mel! If I remember right, a lot of people call them bolo's but I think its actually bola. Or do I have that backwards? Regardless, I like it!

From Wikipedia (for what its worth):
Silversmith Victor Cedarstaff of Wickenburg, Arizona, claims to have invented the bolo tie in the late 1940s, and later patented[4] his slide design.
According to an article in Sunset:
Victor Cedarstaff was riding his horse one day when his hat blew off. Wary of losing the silver-trimmed hatband, he slipped it around his neck. His companion joked, "That's a nice-looking tie you're wearing, Vic." An idea incubated, and Cedarstaff soon fashioned the first bola tie (the name is derived from boleadora, an Argentine lariat).[5]
Boleadoras or bolas (from Spanish bola, "ball") are throwing weapons made of weights attached to the end of cords.
It is also said that the bolo tie is a North American pioneer creation that dates back to between 1866 and 1886. There is a bolo tie on display at a trading post in Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, said to date back that far.[citation needed]

LOL, Rally. That entry from Wikipedia swaps bolo and bola around constantly. That is really neat, Mel. My sister's sheltie keeps bringing deer parts home, much to her dismay. Perhaps she'll bring home a shed or two come spring for me to play with...the sheltie, that is.

This is such a great piece Mel! Very creative. Question. If this were to fit around one's neck a little_too tight.. would it be considered a Bola Constrictor? heh

That is really nice and I know it's a bola but it's too cool to be gender specific. That could be worn as a necklace with a nice gray outfit.

A very creative bola. It has a simple rustic appearance to it. Do you wear some of those fancy painted cowboy boots with it? Bob

*LOL* At beef's comment. And Bobby, I've got to admit I have a weakness for fancy boots but am strong enough to stay away from the really garish painted ones *L*.....Mel

Mel
At some of our local rock shops they have bolos for sale that they made back in the 70's that never sold. Most of them have very nice stones like Morrisonite, Bruneau, willow creek and Owyhee Picture jasper. I have thought about purchasing some for the stones but I have a hard time tearing apart someones hard work. Most are actually priced less than what the cabochon that is set in it is worth about $15 to $25 each.

Wow Mel!
That's a corker! I love the agate and the setting is so natural! Excellent design, I love it's origin, and the finished result looks great, that's a resourceful and attractive piece Mel! Thanks for sharing it with us! I really enjoyed seeing it.
Cheers,
Sparkles.

I like this one Mel!!!
We need a pic of you in the tie and some swank boots!! Just don't let the tie constrict all that knowledge in that brain of yours, we need it!!!
Don't see many bolo's up here!

Really nice, Mel! I used to work at a western tack and clothing store/record store in the 70's. Most excentric place you ever saw...anyway we also catered to the square dance crowd and they bought the heck out of bola ties. I know they are still out there dancing like crazy and I bet there is still a big market with them for just what you have there. T

Great job incorporating stone and horn into a work of art. Yes, it is called bolo tie.

I am tucking this design away for future references. We have a lot of deer antlers in this part of the woods that would work nicely for such a great design.
