Hey everyone - I have a friend, a new acquaintance where my sister works - who has a slab saw (inherited, the lucky stiff) and he's having some issues trying to find fresh lubricant (oil?)
Normally he'd drive to Alpha supply locally (Bremerton, WA) but the local Alpha is moving to another city, and he doesn't know where else to shop. He tried one supplier not too far away, but he's out.
His question, that he asked me to put forth, is: Is there something else he can use that won't damage the saw, other than the traditional lubricant for a gravity fed slab saw? He's apparently going to use mineral oil this weekend, though he knows it'll "gunk up" and need cleaned. Or for my benefit, is there a question I should ask HIM in order to better understand what he needs to ask?
Thanks in advance.

Lots of people that are concerned about toxic saw oils use food grade mineral oil. It can be purchased by the gallon at feed stores. I dont know if it works as well as other oils but at least its food grade and doesnt make your slabs all stinky.

So mineral oil basically won't damage the saw? I think that's his main concern, having inherited this machine he doesn't want to ruin it and have to buy a replacement.

I use mineral oil in all my saws. Rock cutting oil is basically mineral oil with some additives that make the mud clump up and settle to the bottom, the additives generally are pretty foul smelling. Straight food grade or technical grade mineral oil will work just fine and has almost no odor.
Hope he has fun with it.....................Tony

I also use mineral oil in all my saws and have never had any problems. The mineral oil is a lot better on your hands also. Keith

How much oil does he need for this saw? You're right in my back yard. I might be able to fix your friend up with some mineral oil. Send me a PM if you're interested.
