After loading and starting last night ..... Yes kids .... I now have both barrels loaded and one baby barrel running....
I found one barrel had been leaking. Not too bad ... but enough for me to yank it off the tumbler, open it carefully, and reclose it. Or, so I thought.
I place it back on the tumbler, turn around, hear a load POP, then gurgling.
I turn around and one barrel had literally popped its top. What a mess!!!
Being determined, I cleaned everything up, rinsed (until water ran clear) all the towels in a few buckets of water (that gets tossed outside), start a load of wash for all the towels, and proceed to reload rocks (I also took a 2-3 of the larger ones out) and grit and water.
I very carefully and with patience (ya ya I know) place the lid in the barrel so it is even all the way around, place the metal cap on and make sure that it is seated down as far as it can go evenally and screw back on the washer and nut.
I watched it for about 10-15 minutes (I went and got my coffee first) minutes to make sure that it was (hopefully) not going to do it again.
I have the tumblers on a large 1/2"-3/4" hard plastic chopping block (about 2-2 1/2" long). I now have a large and double folded towel under and peeking out on the sides the plastic chopping block ... just in case.
Thanks for listening (Again!) Julie

It sure is a mess if they pop off from the gasses that build up! I find that if I run a new tumble in some soap (ivory or dreft, even borax if need be) for a few hours and then rinse well, I have really cut down on the lids popping off.A lot of organic matter that you may not notice cling to the rocks and they build up gasses. Some rocks are gassy on their own so it is best to "burp" them every 2 days through the course and maybe longer. Jaspers and agates don't seem to give me as much trouble if I wash them first. Good luck! Fran

Sounds like you have been christened with the infamous "blowout". Congratulations and welcome to being a tumbleholic! Jo
