At the suggestion of Michael John.... i want to take the family "Rock Hounding" I think I said that right...
any locals know of good places in the Bay area. Local to San Mateo would be better.
-What do I need to take with me? a lump hammer? -or is that a no no... -also will parks & rec have a freak our if they see us taking rock out of parks???
My daughter is five - so no advanced "El Capitan" like adventures are possible!
Thanks!
Andy

If you want to take a drive to the North, Rodeo beach near Bolinas on the Marin Headlands has some great chert, jasper, quartz and the occasional carnelian. It's all beach pebbles so great for a 5 year old. I think it's a state park so hauling off buckets of the stuff is probably not a good idea. If you want to drive up north even more, goat rock beach near Jenner has some good beach pebbles too. If you park next to the rock, it's the smaller beach on the north side. About half way down the beach is an nice outcropping of multicolored jasper and quartz. It's also easy collecting and good for tumbling. Just watch out for sneaker waves! Hope that helps Steve

BTW, I've collected from the goat rock beach many times. In both cases as long as you keep to yourself you are probably OK. Steve

A well known location is the beach between Capitola and New Brighton State Park beach. If you stick to the "intertidal zone" (the exposed area between "mean high tide" and where-ever the current tide level is) you can collect fossil bearing material. The rock is a dark gray with white fossils (shells, and occasionally bone). Just be sure: - you are NOT on the State Beach while collecting (illegal);
- watch out for waves, especially with children
- do NOT dig from the cliffs (illegal)
- HAVE FUN!
P.S. There are a couple of different gem and mineral clubs in your general area (the Penninsula GMS meets in Los Altos, San Francisco GMS, and Sequoia GMS meets in Redwood City). You might try checking the clubs out because they often have special kid-oriented programs. Dean
